Film Effect
Posted by Chris Sheridan on June 20, 2005 at 5:35 amIs there any way to give digital video a “film” look within FCP? Without buying a plug-in?

June 20, 2005 at 7:27 amDepends on what you mean by ‘Film Effect’. You can take the edge off video by de-interlacing or even the ‘Flicker Filter’ works a treat. Either of these will soften the nasty fields that video has. I’m in Pal land and this is what I do.
Crushing the blacks and messing around with Gamma will also give your pictures more oomf as well.
There should be plenty of posts on the Cow with further detail.
good luck.

June 20, 2005 at 12:58 pmThat’s right Mike. You can do some pretty neat stuff without plugins, but you’re still missing out on 24p and gamma curves, which as far as I know, can’t be done without a plugin or three!
I guess what I’d do is download the Film Effects demo, see what’s possible, and try and duplicate it with free tools. If you can get the look you want then fine, but if you can’t, then the decision is up to you.
