I wish this style would go away. Is there decent vector clip art with the fancy french
    curve embellishments?

Don’t know if this is what you’re after, but there is a font called Mosh X put out by misprintedtype.com.

It’s a beauty of a font and I bought it. Unfortunately for this graphic I
    need things really smooth.

I would just scan in something you like and use the Illustrator pen tool to
    manually outline it.
The auto outlines leave you with too many points.
You also could try some of the illustrator brushes.

Go to http://www.houseoflime.com and check out the ‘dings’ font section,……TONS of curvy cool ornamental ‘ding’ fonts,….you can then use them in Illus. scale up, convert to outlines and viola!
They are only like $5 a piece too

Hope this is what you were looking for……….
