DaVinci 19 has been giving me some trouble with uploading clips into my media pool recently when trying to start a new project. This has primarily been happening if I am trying to upload MP3s, but it also has been giving me the runaround with MP4s and I cannot find the pattern.

    Today, for example:

I started a new project, opened the media pool window, and imported an MP4 (MPEG-4 movie, 4.09 GB). It imported just fine, I did my edits, and exported the project as an MP3.

Later in the day, I started a new project, opened the media pool window, and imported an MP4 (MPEG-4 movie, 1.2 GB). Nothing happened. Nothing appeared in my media pool. I then tried importing an MP3 (MP3 Audio- 708 KB)- this MP3 was the export of the first project I worked on this morning, so it was exported out of DaVinci. Nothing happened, this file did not appear in the media pool. In this same new project, though, I was able to import the original MP4 I edited earlier in the morning. So it isn’t this new project not working, since I can successfully import SOME media.

Clearly it isn’t the SIZE of the original media. In the past I have for some reason had to upload an MP4 before DaVinci will let me import an MP3 into my media pool.

At this point I am assuming there is some kind of glitch going on and the advice is going to be to reinstall the program. I figured I should ask if anyone knows what could be causing this before I go ahead and do that though.

    Hey Avi,

MP4 and MP3 file formats are just a wrapper, or a container, for what could be any file format inside the MP4 / MP3.

Not sure from your post if the source of your files that you use are the same format, and/or identical to the earlier file that you used?

I am on PC, and have found that for some codecs I needed to purchase that specific codec. Before the MP4 would playback on my system.

The other issue could be wheter you are on Davinci Free, or Davinci Studio?

My first go to would be to convert the file to a format that you know will work, forexample take the MP3, and make it a wave file. Question there is whether you need to go online, or get a third-party software to do it for you.

    Hope that this helps?

Ah, thank you. I didn’t know that about MP4s/MP3s. I am currently using the free version of DaVinci.

When I go back and look at the codec information, the file that did work lists the codecs as “Timecode, MPEG-4 AAC, H.264”

When I look at some of the other videos that did not upload, some list the codecs as “MPEG-4 AAC, H.264”. The other files are MP3s and don’t give me any of that information in a place I can find easily (I’m on Mac).

    Hey Avi,

Have you got VLC media player installed on your Mac?
    It is free to use.

If you play the file in VLC, you should be able to do COMMAND + I to bring up media information.

Adding, that if the file plays in VLC on the Mac, you might have to upgrade to Davinci Studio, or transcode your rushes to an accepted format.

I have decided that this has not been an issue with my files, but an issue with DaVinci.

I went back and tried to import ANY video file I have previously successfully used with no luck EXCEPT for that single one I used in the initial post.

In the short term I was able to work around the problem when I imported the whole folder instead of individual files. Once the whole folder was imported all of my video files were accessible.

Very weird. Not sure what a better long term solution will be, but at least I got it to work for now.
