I work on a project and want to store it for future editing,I save it to a second hard drive and the 4 gig file takes up only a few kilobytes of space. What happens to the rest of the file?

enjoy yourself, it’s later than you think.

Because when you are saving a Vegas project file, only
a small project file is saved, which stores only
information of your edits, video and audio files, location,
file names etc (as a reference) of all the files that are used in the project…
However on the other hand, if you want everything that is
involved in your project saved in one folder/location, simply tick
Copy Media with Project at the bottom of the Save As dialogue box
    when saving your Project.
Then you will have everything saved the way you want it.
