    Hi Guys,

I have an amateur question on File Size and FCP.

I am editing my first feature film.

I imported (20) hours of RAW Footage HDV to Apple Pro Res 422.
The footage is 1.5 TB in size.

I have a 2 TB G-RAID which I’m saving the whole project to.
    I am cutting on a iMac 2.66GHZ i5.

My question is if I edit a 70 minute sequence/mix audio/color correct – would I be able to fit this on my 2 TB Drive?

In other words, does anyone know off hand if 500 GB sounds like enough space for the other elements of the project?

Apparently I should’ve imported HDV codec (300GB in size) and then outputted to Apple Pro Res when I had the final cut. But, I’m a novice to the process and captured all my footage Pro Res.

I am assuming I am going to need to get a bigger drive.
However, I’d love to get input from anyone that’s worked with this much footage or how they go about ensuring they have enough space for their film.

    Thanks for your time.
    Ted

[Ted Ryan] “does anyone know off hand if 500 GB sounds like enough space for the other elements of the project?”

Absolutely not Ted. ProRes is approximately 60Gb per hour, and between render files and exported versions, and the minimum of 10% free space you need to keep your drives running soundly, you’re inevitably going to hit the wall.

Rather than waste your time dealing with the inevitable, prepare yourself, and have another drive on hand before you need it. Otherwise, you’ll find yourself dealing with silly file management tasks that will rob you of your creative time causing your project to suffer.

So, don’t go there, give your project its best chance — filmmaking is tough enough without sabotaging yourself over hard drives.

You can use the AJA data rate calculator @ https://aja.com/products/software/

This should help with deciding how much space you need.

You did this correctly. HDV is a pain to edit and a bigger pain to conform. Pro res is a good choice here, you’re in a frame based codec.
