I have found the max file size I can record to my Laptop with Premiere is 3.65 Gigabytes or so, which equates to about 18 minutes of footage. Is there anyway to work around or change the maximum? I don’t even know if it is a Premiere problem or a problem with my computer.

    Thanks

    Rick

This is a limitation of the file system used by your hard drive. The FAT32 file system is limited to maximum file sizes of just under 4 GB. If you’re running Win2k or WinXP, you can change your hard drive to use NTFS instead of FAT32. The maximum file size limit on NTFS is something in the terabytes range- hours and hours of video. I believe there’s a document on the Microsoft web site that has instructions on how to convert from FAT32 to NTFS.

    Thank you.

Are there any disadvantages or things I should be aware of in regards to the NTFS File sytem before I switch over?

Not that I know of. You might want to back up any important files first. Although MS claims that you can do the conversion to an existing disk without a problem, you are making a major change to the disk and that poses a potential risk for data loss.

That being said, on other forums I’ve heard from several people who made the conversion and had zero problems.
