Got word from an editor that when he viewed a day’s worth of my footage there were MANY duplicate shot names – those 5 or 6 lettered/numbered names given to each take that are supposed to be so random they won’t duplicate in a few million or so times.

Can this be true? If so, can it be avoided?

I shot out about ten 8-GB P2 cards. After transferring the files from each one I’d reformat the card in the camera and continue. Most, if not all, the cards had spanning shots so the Text file would have been in use (so I’d think there’d be a further point of reference for the camera not to duplicate the labeling).

This news came from the director – I’ll be speaking to the editor today, but wanted to at least get some info ahead of time.

    Thoughts? Ideas?

    Thanks,

    -Scott

I wish I knew. We had 3 duplicate names from a single days shoot. And we were told that this wouldn’t happen if you had 40 cameras shooting for two years straight.

Don’t know how to solve this issue. I just keep the cards in separate folders and note the file structure. But this is dangerous.

I too have had duplicate names, Major problems because it.
Just be aware and don’t try and move media, relink.
    Good luck.
I wish the magic fairys would do a software update on the camera and fix this. Seems like a simple fix.

Well what I do is rename all the shots inside the P2 viewer. import >p2>viewer

and before I queue the select shots, I rename them something like 76.extmanbuyscar.T2 (scene 76 take 2).

never had a problem this way before.

But I do have a AJ-PCD20 so I wonder if that is a factor.

Until you lose a hard drive and all your media and you need to re-import it, but you have no clue what Sc76-T2 links to. In my opinion, include the original clip name somewhere, after the name, or in the NOTES section of the clip. JUST IN CASE.

Yes in my second-to-none paranoia, I back up everything to no less than 3 drives.

The way I look at it, 500 GB is 250 bucks.. compared to the value of the materials I shoot, this is a drop in the bucket..

Can’t be too safe- I’m always on this forum and if there is a better idea out there, I’m on it.

we also have a custom naming scheme carried over from our tape logging days. ie, LFhdvTordrillos13-10, which is:

LF – movie “Lost and Found”
    hdv – shot on HDV
Tordrillos – the trip to the Tordrillos mtn range in AK
    13 – tape number 13
    10 – shot number ten

we shoot docu-style so theres no takes or scenes in the name.

this allows us to put all the tapes in chronological order, even though every tape’s TC starts at zero. to modify this for P2 use, we changed it to: LFp2Tordrillos001-10, so now its P2 card number 1, shot 10. before we replace the MXF name with this name in the log, we copy the MXF name into the “Shot/Take” field in the “Import Panasonic P2” window, so the original name never gets lost. we also rename the card folder 001 to LFp2Tordrillos001, but leave the MXF files in the CONTENTS folders with their original name. if and when we need to reconnect, we have all the info we need.

bit long of an explanation, but i hope that helps. btw, we use the Quantum SDLT600A for archive and i can’t recommend this highly enough. some people get scared off by the $5k price tag for the deck, but when you compare it to $65k for an HDCAM deck or $15k for a Varicam deck, its looks pretty damn cheap. i can fit 7 hours of 720p24 on a $78 SDLT tape. thats a savings of $286 vs 7 hours of HDCAM. yes Hard Drives are cheap, but i have had so many go down over the years that i just can’t trust them, even if i have 3 copies. just too fragile with limited shelf life.
