  • File Error: Wrong type. when opening project.

On friday I switched the hard drives in my mac pro and went from a mirrored raid to a striped raid w/backup drive. Anyways after installing the new drives I had everything from the original raid(that was on a usb backup disk) copy over to the new striped raid. This morning I came in and tried to open up one of my projects and I get the message “File Error: Wrong type”.
Then I tried other projects and get the same message for all my FCP project files on the new raid now. I then tried opening off of my backup drive and the same issue happened. I tried trashing my preferences and used diskwarrior to check the data which showed it was all fine.
So somewhere in the backup process my fcp file were corrupted on some level.

I’ve been using the program PsyncX to automatically backup this data at the end of every day. Could this be corrupting it? Does anyone else use this program?

This isn’t detrimental at the moment because I have all of my autosaves(that do actually open) that are saved to my system drive, also I still have the 2 original drives from the mirrored raid untouched in case, but I would like to get to the bottom of this as it seems my backup system is useless if it corrupts my most important files.

So far as I know, PsynchX & Carbon Copy Cloner both use the same Unix utility to copy/backup data. I’ve never had a problem with copies or backups made with CCC, and I don’t recall that I ever had a problem with PsynchX, either.

Does the corrupt project file have the extension .fcp on the end? If not, try adding it, & see what happens.

It didn’t have an extension(but it had the proper icon), but that was one of the first things I tried and it didn’t help.
