I realize from a little digging on the net that this is a common message/problem.

I was working on an edit when suddenly my ext. harddrive (a Lacie 500g) went offline…but the icon was still on the desktop when I hid FCP to see what was going on.
Anyway, as you well know, all files were off-line. I went through and reconnected the media for the project on all master clips in my bin, which has the project back up..BUT now i can’t save the darn thing.

I tried disk utility, but it wouldn’t allow me to repair permissions. I also tried starting a new project and bring all my work in the timeline over to a new timeline, but that project won’t save either.

What can I do??? Please help, and thank you!

Get DISK WARRIOR now and run it.

That saved my life more than once.

Yes, install it. It will install on your SYSTEM drive anyway. Then run it on the LaCie and cross your fingers.

i lost a little bit of progress when I quit w/out savin, but very minimal. disc is running fine again.

however, does DW always disconnect the disc and give you the “..not properly put away” message? It took the icon of the disc off the desktop during repairs, and the Mac twice told me i had improperly put away the disc..

it all seems okay now, although disc warrior “unexpectedly quit” after it finished the work on both my ext. discs.

oh well. it all seems good now. thank you.

do you recommend periodic rebuilding of disc via DW, as a preventive?

I recommend periodic erasing and DW rebuilds after each project, to ensure drive health. And yes, it will remove the icon from the desktop and give that error….I wouldn’t worry about that. It is doing more good than harm.

    Glad things worked out.

“I tried disk utility, but it wouldn’t allow me to repair permissions.”

Were you trying to repair disc permissions on your external drive? You can only repair disc permissions on a drive that has OS X installed. However you can run a repair disc on any drive.

thanks…but it wouldn’t even allow me to do that since the disc was in use. but, thanks Shane and Disc warrior, we got it all worked out.

Disk utillity is not enough. Do what Shane says. Diskwarrior or Techtools. Out of disk problems, whenever a FC project start to cause me problems I just open a new project and I select and dragg everithing from the brownser of the old project to the brownser of the new one. Its allways works if is a problem related with the very project.
