    Hey Gang,

This is a weird one and has happened quite a few times, but I’m just now getting around to posting it for some help.

Every now and then when I go to save my FCP Project I get this error that says, “File Error: Unknown file.” In order to save the project I have to do a “Save Project As…” Not only will it not allow me to save over the current project, but I can’t even save the project on the same hard drive as the original regardless of what I name it. So I save the project on different drive, delete the original and then move the newly saved/created project back over and continue working.

So I’m not sunk or anything, but this is obviously annoying. Any ideas as to why this would be happening?

    Appreciate the input!

Try saving the project file in your documents folder exclusively. Shouldn’t be kept on a drive other than your startup disk.

Really? So my FCP Project shouldn’t be on the same drive as the media? (I have a secondary SATA Raid drive I keep all my footage on). Interesting. Is there a reason for that?

Yes. It’s a small file which needs to be saved often, and read all the time from a drive, so putting it away from the media drive keeps that drive running faster.

    Are you having a laugh?

this is just an annoying bug in FCP.

I suspect it may be permissions related but it has nothing to do with the frequency of access.

We have several FCP machines set up working on the same projects from a storage server. All of our machines get this error occasionally, and it is almost always around 5:30pm. The time thing really throws me for a loop. All the drives are still up and can be read and written to by any other application any time. Not cool FCP. Not cool.
