“File Error: Illegal Name” error… PLEASE HELP!!!!

I’m trying to export a feature film in Final Cut 6.0.6 and I keep getting the “File Error: Illegal Name” error every time. I’ve researched this heavily and tried everything, including trashing my user prefs, resetting scratch disks to a different hard drive, double checking settings, saving the project as a different name, etc. Nothing has worked at all. I’ve never had this problem before and its already caused me to miss the deadline. I’m in desperate need here… PLEASE HELP!!!

You mean Export a Quicktime?

What format are you working in?

Are you exporting to a Mac formatted drives?

What happens if you try and export 1min of footage?

Aaron,

I’m trying to render the sequence when I get this message. I’m trying to render it and export it through Compressor for DVD. Here are the sequence settings:

– Frame Size: 1440 x 1080
– Pixel Aspect Ratio: HD (1440 x 1080)
– Field Dominance: None
– Editing Timebase: 29.97
– Compressor: Apple ProRes 422 HQ
– Audio Settings: 48 kHz, 16 bit

It renders and exports fine for a 1 minute Quicktime. The drive I’m exporting to is MS-DOS (FAT32) formatted… could that be the issue?

FAT-32 has a MAX file size of 2GB. So there’s your culprit.

Well damnit! Thanks for the help… is there anyway to format it to Mac without losing all the files and what not?

4GB limit actually but yes it is still the problem.

Nope in formatting a hard drive it must be erased.

Just copy the files on your drive to a different drive formatted Mac OS Extended (HFS+) non-journaled.
