A client brought in a hard drive and wanted me to dump all the clips from a recent fcp job onto his drive. There were 232 clips it transferred 219 without complaining. 6 clips were judged corrupt and 7 had file names that were too long or illegal characters. The six “corrupt clips” playback fine in fc or with quicktime, and if it doesn’t like the file names why the heck did it let me name them that in the first place?

I’ll bet they have a “slash” ( / ) in the title and/or some other “not allowed” file name character(s).

For some reason you can name some files with these characters “directly” in some software, but the Mac won’t allow you to make changes or copy them later.

Did you use FCP’s “Media Manager” to help you make your copy of the clips?

One of its functions is to help you copy and move clips and projects.
