    Hello,

I sometimes wonder how other editors manage their files and bins now that we are more and more in a tapeless world.

My approach is to create sequences from every disk or card I’ll receive. I do this cause I’m so used to scroll thru tapes and find what I’m looking for. Opening up each and every single clip from an XDCam for example, would drive me nuts.

However, one thing that seems to sabotage this workflow is the fact that I can not take full advantage of the ‘match frame’ function anymore, something I use constantly. Match frame brings me back to the clip not the sequence where I put the clip and edit it from.

Am I missing something maybe? Is there a way to use match frame that will reference the sequence it came from?

I know that I could also export those ‘footage sequences’ and bring them back into the avid as one clip and then it will behave pretty much like the good old tape, but this can take a lot of time, plus it also disables the option to batch import in case something went really really wrong, so it simply isn’t workable and safe.

    I’m open to any suggestions!

    Thanks

This is precisely why there is a longstanding feature request that would allow for ‘source rolls’ or ‘selects’ or ‘stringouts’, which allow you to toss a bunch of source clips in a sequence that would then behave like a source clip. Preferably with a MatchFrame option.

    You are not alone.

    Hoi Job!

I actually just posted this as a feature request on the avid feature request forum as well. Hope it helps.

Kinda weird though this doesn’t exist yet, in any NLE I think.

A possible workaround might be to load each “batch” of clips from a card onto a black text document loaded up for script based editing. The “script” could have be lines of description to help navigate. From there you can select any or all and do a play back with TAB forward or TAB back. A pseudo playback of the master clips as a string-out.

The same functionality exists in the bin without a script – select all the clips and select “play” from the bin menu in the bottom left.

This doesn’t negate the need for a “sequence as source” that is being discussed here.
