I need some suggestions on how to work with ease in/ease out in the canvas. Whenever I apply ease in/ease out to one of my ending positions, FCP creates some strange motion (roller coaster-like) instead of just easing in – almost as though it creates some sin wave type motion path.

All I am doing in the above description is scaling an image from one size to another and adjusting the position accordingly so that it stays in the frame. Smoothing scaling isn’t enough. Lyric’s PanZoom Pro takes forever to render and Motion is buggy and inconsistent for me (at times).

In FCP Help, type in “Velocity Handle” and read over that material. That will get you in the zone in learning how to control ease in/ease out. My book also explains it with workflow examples and exercises if you need more practice.

i actually started with the FCP manual and followed what it explains. However just by turning on the ease in/ease out feature even before adjusting velocity handles, FCP moves my images in an undefined path from it’s own calculations – nothing I told it to do.

By default it doesn’t always work as expected. Adjust the velocity handles to tune the move. To do this, I zoom way in on the canvas and tweak the handles as the effect loops in Quick View. This is a workflow that works well for me.
