Hi there. I’m from Australia and work in a PAL environment. I have created a JPEG based logo animation in FCP 5.1.2 and then transcoded from PAL to NTSC via Compressor. The result is tearing in the logo. I then returned to FCP and turned the ‘Field Dominance’ to NONE in the sequence settings. That immediately made everything look normal again, however as soon as I output via Compressor again, import to DVD Studio Pro and simulate the playback, the tearing has returned. The DVD Studio Pro project is set to NTSC. Can field domiance and order be the reason for this tearing and how do I fix this problem? Many thanks, Simon.

Why not import the jpegs direct into an NTSC project and save a grotty conversion…?

To deal with the interlacing problems, the solution is an external interlaced monitor (ie TV).
Any way, before to send to Compressor, first make sure that your output from FC is correct. If you are not sure about the field order, before to export as field dominance NONE, deinterlace the footage that you have set in your logo. Then on export you got a progresive film. When you apply your set-up in Compressor keep the same field dominance of your movie.
And do not trust too much the preview in Compressor. Some times the image looks horrible in the computer screen but the final DVD looks great. If you want to get a good transcoding PAL-NTSC you must set Compressor in MANUAL FRAME CONTROL that make the process killing slow.
    Salud,

YOu have to make sure and set your output field order correctly as well for the NTSC conversion. It should be set to either Lower or none in the frame controls button.

Thank you so much Mike, Dave, Rafalaos and Jeremy. I appreciate you assistance and have applied your advice. Your suggestions, along with another to try a free download program called JES Deinterlacer https://www.xs4all.nl/~jeschot/home.html#DEI, has solved my problem. Thanks again for taking the time to help. Have a great Christmas, Simon Malcolm, Adelaide, South Australia.
