    Hi guys,

I recently had a TVC returned to me because it had field problems on fade up/downs of the main picture and of the graphics. I think I know what caused it and I’ve fixed it and we’re cool. My problem is this – I couldn’t detect it.

As soon as the TV station tried to ingest it they knew immediately and it was flagged. When I jog it on our Digibeta machine then I can see the problem fine but on FCP, stepping through it doesn’t show me anything. I’ve got a Kona LHe feeding an interlaced broadcast monitor via SDI.

Stupid question: I assume the Digibeta in jog mode is moving field by field but when hitting the right arrow to navigate the FCP timeline I’m moving frame by frame – is this right? If I’m right, how am I supposed to detect these sorts of problems right from the edit bay?

    Thank a lot.

If you have an interlaced broadcast monitor attached then you should simply be able to play back directly from the timeline and thus see very clearly any interlacing issues on your interlaced display … stepping through won’t help as it is not stepping field by field, you need to play through whilst watching the broadcast monitor, not the Canvas window

Thanks Andy – I’m aware of needing to view on the broadcast monitor. My field problem was only on the fade up and downs of footage and graphics so we’re talking about 8 or 10 frame fades. In real time it’s actually really hard to see the problem.

So is it right that FCP can’t expose this problem in baby steps the way the Digbetacam can?

Correct, FCP does not have the option to step through field by field. Its been on the wish-list since time immemorial but please do add your voice through Apple’s feedback mechanism (seriously, the more feedback they get on something the more likely they will act on it)

What you can do is to set your Canvas view to 100% which allows it to display both fields simultaneously … can be helpful for spotting field based issues, but doubt it would help for what you’re seeing (or rather what you’re not seeing).

On the AJA card there is a setting for pause, on Full Frame or Single Field.

Thanks Michael – I tried messing with thst but it didn’t show my field problems when stepping through fades. In theory I thought setting this to field would solve my problems but apparently not.

That will only work on your broadcast monitor as it is downstream of FCP. What does help if you don’t have a broadcast monitor is to set your Canvas view to 100%, even if that is too big. FCP does a poor job of resize if it is not set to an evenly divisible percentage. That will allow you to see the fields in FCP. Now you might not be able to tell if they are reversed, but it couldn’t hurt to try.

Thanks Michael, but I am using a broadcast monitor, downstream of FCP. So are you saying I should be able to see fields as I step through the timeline on FCP?

Of course I can see fields in real time but these are 8 frame fade ups and downs so it’s really hard to see a problem. I want an edit bay solution that lets me see this problem as easily as I saw it when jogging the tape on the Digibetacam.

[Michael Costa] ” I want an edit bay solution that lets me see this problem as easily as I saw it when jogging the tape on the Digibetacam. “

Then you’ll need to change your NLE Michael. As already stated, in FCP you cannot step through field by field.
