  • Few questions about Premiere Pro CS5

Posted by Andrey Karpov on February 7, 2011 at 12:08 am

I’ve been wanting to switch to Premiere Pro CS5 from FCP7 but I have a few simple questions.

The only thing I’m concerned about is whether or not I’ll be able to work as fast and efficiently as I do on FCP.

I will list the procedure in FCP in parenthesis to try to get across EXACTLY what kind of procedure I’m inquiring about.
    ————————————————————
    In CS5 can I:
1- Copy effects from one clip to every clip in the sequence?
(FCP: Ctrl+C , select clips, press A, select filters/speed/motion whatever)

2- Set default transitions and effects to keys?
(In FCP my 1 through 9 and Shift+1 through 9 trigger effect and transition presets)

3- Split a clip without pressing pressing C for cut tool and clicking on the place I want the clip to be split?
(In fcp, “]” just splits a clip in half. No clicking required.)

4- Change speed / duration of multiple clips by highlighting them and pressing a shortcut for speed?
(In fcp I highlight multiple clips and press S to change the duration to 4 seconds and then press Z to remove speed attributes from all clips)

5- Insert all clips from a bin into the sequence with the default transition placed automatically?
(in fcp you drag the clips to “add with transition” and it adds all teh clips to the sequence with a handle and your default transition)

6- Can I “find all” to select a certain transition in my sequence so that they are all selected so that i may delete them all at once?

7- Can I save my effect presets to a favorites bin?

That’s all for now. I’ll post more questions if I can think of any.
The reason I ask is because I want to build myself a nice PC for CS5. I’m kind of getting sick of rending in FCP. I mean sure, I am at the point where I don’t have to render an effect to know what it will look like but I still feel the need to render after every edit.
In my line of work, over 80% of the time is spent rendering so it is in my best interest to SEVERELY cut that down to maximize profits and efficiency.

New hardware + New software usually = new workflows, you have to realize that doing stuff one way can’t be done exactly the same on a different platform/software do to the proprietary nature of software.

My fcp intern picked up cs5 in 2 hrs! If you like just remap the cs5 keys to mirror fcp commands… And for the most part it is very very similar.

    Highly worth the upgrade!

    I7 2600k
    16 gigs 1333 ram
    2 hdd’s 1tb or larger
Gts 450 or gtx 460 more is overkill!
    650watt power supply.
    Antec 300 case
    Cheap 24x DVD burner
    2x 25 inch monitors
    ————–
About $1300.00. Rockin PC that beats my 980x with 12gigs by a few seconds rendering!

I know the 1155 chipset was recalled and yes it is an issue…but not a big deal, just find someone still selling them, I found a Texas company in amazon selling them still, I got two more for my editors!

I realize that it’s going to be a new work flow but I hear talk that CS5 has most if not all the “shortcuts” that Final Cut Pro 7 has.

Time is kind of a big issue for me and I heavily rely on most of the things I listed to be able to edit fast.

I was just hoping someone could go down the list and tell me whether each thing is or isn’t possible in CS5.

    Good Questions!

    1. Yes, you can copy an effect and paste it to multiple clips. https://bit.ly/fbAr37
    2. No, transitions and effects are not menu items, so you cannot assign keyboard shortcuts to them.
    3. Yes, to splice a clip on the fly in the timeline, press Shift + CMD + K. Unlike FCP, it is not necessary to have tracks selected to pull this off. BTW, with FCP you use CTRL + V, bracket is a trim key. https://bit.ly/hssQSw
    4. Yes, press CMD + U after selecting multiple clips. Enter a new speed in the dialog box. BTW, Your FCP keys don’t sound right, you must be remapped. https://bit.ly/hkFdJn
    5. Yes, you can add a bin of clips with a default transition to a sequence. You need to be in icon mode first, then click the Automate to Sequence button. You have more options than FCP here. You can also add multiple transitions to clips already in the timeline, as well. https://bit.ly/fQJnLl
    6. No, the Find function doesn’t work in the timeline.
    7. Yes, you can save effects presets to the Presets bin. You can’t save transitions, however, you can only save a default transition. https://bit.ly/g75Hmw

If there are any feature requests you might have (saving customized transitions to the Presets bin, have favorite effects available via a keyboard shortcut, Find for the timeline), please do a feature request: https://www.adobe.com/go/wish

    Hope this helps.

    Kevin,

I HOPE the folks at Adobe are going to add the Transition and Effect favorites like we have in Final Cut Pro in the next version, and quickly.

That saves me a TON of time to be able to throw out a 1 frame audio transition to fix a ‘pop’ between two clips or a quick 4 frame dissolve between two clips.

I’ve put that in the request form a couple of times and have asked all my FCP buddies to do the same.

That’s a BIG thing for a lot of us.
