November 22, 2010 at 10:16 pmi’m really laughing now…so if color is so crappy why would the davinci boys being trying to copy it? oh i know because it works and makes sense to almost anyone…i just recently finished a half day training course for young editors on the use of color….within 10 minutes i had them all up and grading and understanding the process…by the end of the session they were all drawing user shapes and tweaking the secondaries and even doing basic tracking of shapes….try showing even some real colorists that on a resolve and it would take all day and they still would be scratching their heads for days until it sunk in! what do they say about “the sincerest form of flattery”…..

November 22, 2010 at 10:24 pmJust because some is asking for a few features doesn’t mean the tool is bad or that everyone wants the same. I wanted realtime playback in Color, but it’s not there yet? Does it make it a bad tool? NO! Worse? That’s… well… an interesting discussion. 😉

November 22, 2010 at 10:44 pmmaybe you need a new mac…i can get faster than real time on mine…i always have to remember to check the “maintain frame rate” tick in user prefs to make sure……and i still say no to sound…it’s enough to have to listen to the client go on about how great his last job was and then explain in great detail how he used this and that to do the shot…..if he was so great he would have lit it properly in the first place and never bothered with the grade…

November 23, 2010 at 1:23 amKim,
You must be smoking something that affects your logic.
DaVinci Resolve is much better than Apple Color with a more intuitive interface and is way faster to use. Resolve is also a lot easier and less cluttered than Apple Color. You will find DaVinci Resolve in the majority of high end color houses… Apple Color, not so much.

November 23, 2010 at 2:58 amI believe that the new update coming will have something similar, which is presets for color isolation, like Vectors in Scratch, I’ve seen it working and it seems very clean, but you can also tune it to avoid color bleeding, and you can use it inside a power windows, which you can’t in Color, there it affects the whole frame.

You’re really funny Kim.
The six-vectors already exist wayyyy before creativecow.net 😀But who cares anyway..

November 23, 2010 at 4:33 amFirst of all, you would never want to use 6 vector HUE to fix the color temperature of the shot. This shows basic lack of understanding the theory of color grading.
Second, 6 vectors are there, they just not available, unless one decides to spend $30k for BM panel. This was already covered by Peter.
The list of missing features is long and puzzling. I like the Resolve’s engineering foundation, speed, low price and simplicity, but paucity of most basic tools for color grading prevents me from using Resolve for grading. At least for me, it is very much work in progress, that hopefully some day will hit it’s stride. I just hope, that by then, it will not be too late… -

November 23, 2010 at 5:49 amWow Wow Wow I am happy to read the post of people not understanding the advantages of Da Vinci Resolve. First let me say that anyone that uses one color corrector more than another will definitely be bias towards what they are familiar with, that doesn’t mean that all the others are useless. The comparison of Apple color originally Silicone color to Da Vinci Resolve is funny to me because the comments reflect the lack of knowledge of how to use Resolve and maybe before one comments they should learn how to use Resolve instead of saying it’s worthless. I know how to use both and so far the comments I have read where someone has said they would like the Resolve do something that Color does well it actually does exactly what they want it to do, they just don’t know how to do it in Resolve. All I’m saying is don’t put something down that you don’t understand yet.

November 23, 2010 at 6:55 amyou’re absolutely right craig…you will find davinci in most “high end” post houses. and that’s really my point. high end price tags! there is a place for the more economically challenged and in case you don’t follow international economic news, the big trend right now, especially in my town is towards downscaling and cheaper solutions…..i often have to work on a budget that wouldnt even buy cigarettes and coffee in america…i’m very serious! i have to to crawl on my hands and knees and jump through hoops just to get paid my daily rate which is about equivalent to the hourly rate in some so called high end post houses! as for my other comments, i have worked on a davinci system for over 25 years and have played around with resolve for the last 4. it is a messy interface and still makes no logical sense to me from a user point of view. and if you read some of the other posts here, to get the best out of it you need the panels, as was pointed out in regard to the secondary isolation and vector curves issue….i just don’t have that kind of money to invest so i am forced, for now, to stick with what works!

November 23, 2010 at 7:20 amFor me some apple stuff is still work in progress like color bugs or soundtrack pro which hangs like …..
I still use them as i want to have my results or they fit my pipeline etc.
So this matureness thing seems to me a bit showing of with lack of knowledge.
In the end what matters is how well and fast you can finish a job and bill your client. Does not matter really if product “feels” this or that. We are not in the feeling business here.
