  • Feature ready for Color! Modify XML, I must flip my whole feature around, clip by clip for Color! Very intense tedious!! Any shortcuts!!??

So I have a feature film in the editing process, its ready to send to Color.

I am doing my prep, but when imported I noticed none of my filter-flip 180 degree shots transfer over, this is my whole feature! In color the whole film is upside down.

I do have like 10 out of 1000+ clips that I used the motion tab- 180degree flip option, and those transfer fine to color.

Is there a way in color to flip footage, or do I have to click on each edited clip in fcp to go the motion tabe flip 180 route?

Is there a shortcut in the final cut pro project file .xml I can do a find and replace option?

I want to tell the .xml project file, find: filter flip 180 and replace: motion tab flip 180

Is there a way do do this?

Thank you, whoever helps me will be saving me 1000 hours to manually delete the flip 180 filter and replace with a motion tab 180 rotation option.

What you need is to flip the clips vertically no turn them 180 degrees.
The Motion tab Rotation is not the way.
Up to the FC Manual whenever you use the Rotation, all the Motion Effects are done in “linear’ mode. The lowest quality available in FC.
What you my try to use the QT Pro features.
Open any of your clip with QT Player and go to Movie Properties> Video Track > Visual setting.
There you can change the display of your clips.
By careful because any change here affect to the way other applications read the clip.
Probably is easier to change the properties of all your clips at once here in QT, but I really don’t know how to do it.

    Thanks, but

How do I do this within FCP? I shot using the m2 lens adapter, all my footage is upside down, I must flip 180 degrees to edit,

How can I do this so its the best quality?

[Clint Nitkiewicz Hernandez] ” flip 180 degrees “
Flip it vertically is not the same that Rotate it 180 degrees.
Your best option is the Flip in the QT Properties.
You do it with a click of the mouse.
    No rendering. No generation lost.
In FC you will need to render everything before start editing.
You must decide it before ingesting to FC, because any posterior change in the Properties of the clips can be catastrophic. FC can don’t recognize the files.
I think you should try well your workflow before starting.
If you have a lot of footage to Flip, sure that Automator or some little application can batch-flip everything.

You do not want to do this, changes in scale and geometry are a weak point in Color.

Very few filters are recognized by Color, we always recommend you strip the filters off and re-apply them after they come back from Color or simply bake the filters into the shots before they go to Color. With that many shots it’s probably not possible.

[Clint Nitkiewicz Hernandez] “Thank you, whoever helps me will be saving me 1000 hours to manually delete the flip 180 filter and replace with a motion tab 180 rotation option. “

    It’s much simpler than that.

Duplicate your timeline (just in case anything goes wrong)

Select ALL (in your duplicated timeline)

Right click any clip and choose Remove Attributes > Filters

Now your Flip Filter is gone from all the clips.

    Deselect ALL

Now rotate your very first clip using the Motion Tab

    Copy that first clip.

Again Select ALL in the timeline

Right click the SECOND clip in your timeline and choose Paste Attributes > Basic Motion

Now keep in mind this will apply ALL the settings of the Motion Tab so if you have anything that is scaled up or positioned in some way, they will lose that.

Quite honestly, I’m not sure if Color accepts changes from the Motion Tab or not as I’ve never sent anything in there that has not been baked when I make changes. If the feature DOES go in there and everything looks correct, do a quick Grade on the first shot, put it into the Render Queue, Render it and send it back to FCP to ensure it still looks clean after render.

After removing clip attributes such as Walter suggested…. why not just flip your
color correction monitor over, grade your film and output an UC Quicktime or similar?

Then flip the outputted QT file after you’ve finished your grade, using the QT properties
    or similar.

That would save a lot of unnecessary rendering and time.

[walter biscardi] “Now rotate your very first clip using the Motion Tab “
    walter,
Using the Motion tab’s “Rotate” is one of the less recommendable operations to do in FC:
The FC manual (Chapt 29/6670 writes:
How Rotation Affects Motion Filtering Quality
When you adjust a clip’s Rotation parameter, the clip is automatically rendered using the
Fastest setting, regardless of the option chosen from the Motion Filtering Quality pop-up
menu of the Video Processing tab of the current sequence settings. For example:
Â If you adjust a clip’s Scale, Center, or Anchor Point parameter: The clip is rendered
using the motion filtering quality option chosen in the Video Processing tab of
    the current sequence settings.
Â If you adjust only a clip’s Rotation parameter: The clip is rendered using the Fastest
    motion filtering quality setting.
Â If you adjust a clip’s Rotation parameter as well as additional motion parameters: The
clip is rendered using the Fastest motion filtering quality setting because the
    Rotation parameter has been adjusted.

If you have an LCD panel like we have here, that’s easy. If you’re using a CRT, flipping it upside down is not something I would do here.

If you’re ending on an angle, absolutely. If you’re simply flipping the image completely over, I haven’t seen any issues with this on our end.

Well, I guess it’s only a dumb question if you use one of those “outdated” CRTs. 🙂
