    Gurus,

We are a film lab and create Avid dailies in HD. In telecine I make an ALE file and an HDCam 1080p tape with audio in sync. Instead of letting the Avid batch capture that tape, can I make one continuous manual input to DNx36, then on a timeline, set the frame punch to match the exact TC start of the tape. From that use the ALE file to AutoSync (?) and have it “cut” the time line into takes and create a Master bin with scenes and takes as if it had been batch captured?

OR, If I make a Master Bin via batch in say DNx175, is there a way to render that hour’s timeline into DNx36 and make a new Master bin for that format? (I need a DNx 36 editor copy, and I need to pull circle takes in a higher resolution HDCam viewing tape, hence 2 different codecs).

    Tough question, huh?

    Thanks, Film Joe

I think what you are looking for is the transcode feature. This would allow you to take a DNxHD175(x) master clip and transcode it to DNxHD36, with the option of preserving the 175(x) original.

Job, thanks. As we are more FCP proficient than Avid, where is the Transcode menu located? Can the transcode take place in the background while we work to create circle takes? And is the transcode render usually faster than real time or more time consuming on most 8 core MacPros?

    Thanks, Film Joe

The transcode function is either under the Bin or Clip menu, I forgot, one of those. It’s combined with the Consolidate module.

The transcode cannot take place in the background, AFAIK.

A transcode is usually much faster than realtime.
