Feathering Edges
Posted by Aaron Cadieux on February 13, 2008 at 6:25 pmHello,
How do I feather JUST the top and bottom edges of a clip rather than feathering all four edges?

February 13, 2008 at 6:40 pmAre you talking about a full screen clip feathering to black on top, or feathering on a PIP?

February 13, 2008 at 6:57 pmBasically, if I crop the top and the bottom of an otherwise full-screen clip, how do I make the crop lines soft and not hard?

February 13, 2008 at 7:03 pmI would create a new color matte (black if you want to feather to black). Place it over your clip, and with the motion settings, zoom it to about 130%, and move up it to the top so that you only see a black bar down to just below the safe margin. Then apply a fast blur to it and play with the blur setting. Do the same for the bottom.
Cheers,
Vince

February 13, 2008 at 7:40 pmThis would be really easy if you have After Effects, because AE allows variable H and V softness on masked images. If you have CS2 or CS3, you could use dynamic link, and render (if necessary) in Premiere.

February 14, 2008 at 8:34 amJust one more: two times video effects>transition>linear wipe. Change the other effects Wipe Angle 180 degrees. Then tweak with both effects’ Transition Completion and Feather adjustments to get the effect you want.

February 14, 2008 at 2:33 pmIt’s too bad they didn’t think to add a feathering option for the crop tool. That would have made things easier.
