Right now I am finishing a personal project on my Mac Pro with Final Cut Studio 2 and 10.4.x I am not planing on upgradeing to Leopard until I have wrapped that project. It is however my plan to do so after that. I am considering
    the following.

    1. clone my start disk to my media disk as a backup. format
the startup disk. Make a clean install of 10.5 on my startup disk and use the emigration assistant to recreate my users and software settings on 10.5

    2. doing as above but installing the software from scratch.

In either case. The 10.4 cloned disc will stay on the media disk until I am sure the Startup disk works as hoped or expected.

Let the machine work for you. Not you for the machine

As has been repeated too many times to count across the Cow, you should not update to Leopard at least until Apple releases their Studio 2 updates. There’s absolutely no reason to go to the new OS as absolutely nothing has been added to FCP with this release as of right now.

A better reason not to update to Leopard is it will break your adobe apps. Older PS 7 will break. Newer AE CS3 won’t work. The adobe thing is just a mess.

But hey, I’ve upgraded to Leopard. I like the features. But I know what I’m doing. If I need to go back to Tiger I can do that. If you don’t know how to backup your system in such a way that you can go back, then don’t upgrade.

Most users haven’t experienced problems with Leopard. You’ll find multiple strings in the AE forum to this effect. Adobe themselves note that you might have trouble….but also notes that you probably won’t.

As to the original question, Shane Ross has an outstanding article on the right steps to take when you’re ready to upgrade your FCP installation to Leopard. It’s absolutely essential reading.

Print it out, read it to your children. Have them read it to their children.

    Seriously. Essential. Read it.
