FCS2/FCP6
Posted by Gary Morris mcbeath on May 10, 2007 at 4:31 pmDoes anyone out there know if footage captured in FCP 5.1.4 will be compatible or can be read by FCP 6?
Thanks,
Gary

May 10, 2007 at 4:33 pmRemains to be seen, but since the latest version of Quicktime (7.1.6) supports FCS2 and FCS then I would think it would be compatible.

How about you beta testers out there? Can you comment on this?
Thanks,

May 10, 2007 at 5:03 pmI’m not a beta tester, but if it isn’t compatible, then Apple will have 800,000 really, really made customers!!!!!
It’s all QuickTime based. As Jeremy said, if it works in QuickTime 7.1.6 (which was updated for FCP6) then it should work in FCP6 too.

May 10, 2007 at 5:08 pmGosh, let me go on record as saying all footage will work in FCP 6. All footage from FCP 1 still works in FCP 5. I’ve never seen a quicktime format be discarded as software upgrades.

You’re kidding right? All beta testers for all companies sign NDA (non-disclosure agreements) that all spell out the legal penalties for speaking publicly about a product and even in some cases you can’t even acknowledge you’re a tester.

May 10, 2007 at 5:16 pmWell, there was a bit of a problem with p2 media between FCP 5.0.4 and FCP 5.1. It was best to reimport the media when switching project version created on FCP 5.0.4 and continuing on FCP 5.1. There was also a few problems when QT7 was released. Since there isn’t a major overhaul to quicktime this time around, I would think that most everything would be compatible with perhaps a few minor quirks, but that’s all guessing and conjecture and wouldn’t really hold up in court.
If it’s regularly captured media, there shouldn’t be a problem, but you never know, you know?

May 10, 2007 at 6:43 pmYa, I was kidding; I sort of knew you couldn’t comment, but I guess I’m so excited about this new release, I lost my common sense.
My original question was based on a previous upgrade in FCP, where I had to render the footage captured in the previous version to make it compatible. But that did work.
Thanks for all in input. Where would I be without the Cow and everything all of you do?
Also, it was nice meeting you Walter at NAB.

What happened is the Render files between some versions were not compatable, not the actual Capture files. So yes, you did need to re-render, but the original capture files were 100% compatable.
100%, captures from any version from 1.0 to 6.0 are all compatable.
