I know it’s recommended to clean install FCS3 on a freshly formatted system, but what are the costs of not going that route?

I’ve had FCS3 for a couple weeks now, but have not installed it, because I haven’t afforded the time to go offline and clean-wipe my system to reinstall everything afresh. I’m willing to take the risk of adding FCS3 on top of a system w/ FCS2. What detriment might this cause? Would there be any advantage of installing FCS3 to a separate user account, could that minimize risk? Please advise.

[Jason Diebler] “I know it’s recommended to clean install FCS3 on a freshly formatted system, but what are the costs of not going that route? “

From what I’ve seen, you risk instability which has been the case with every version of Studio / OS. Some folks on here say they have had no issues with an upgrade, but I would never recommend it.

You can’t. FCS3 will replace FCS2. It’s one or the other.

It takes less than a full day to do the full re-install. Make the time. If you have a desktop, simply purchase another internal hard drive and do the full install to that.

I second Walter’s recommendation. This way you have something to fall back on, if the FCP 7 install doesn’t work for some reason.

Thank you, your advice is much appreciated… will wait for downtime to clean install.

Tsk tsk Jason, didn’t you learn that clean installs are best at the NMC? 😉

To speed things up considerably, if you make disc images of the install discs on a drive (FCP, Adobe Suite, any other apps), the install flies. I think I did a machine with FCP, CS4, iWork, iLife, and then all the various little installs (Firefox, Cyberduck, Toast, etc) and the plugins in probably 1.5 hours versus probably 5 or so.

Sorry guys, I disagree. First, clone your drive. Then rename all the FC Studio apps…name Final Cut Pro Final Cut Pro 6 etc. Motion, soundtrack, Compressor, DVDSP all of them. Put the version number at the end.

    Now do the install.

Bingo….both versions on the same Mac. I have a Powerbook with all versions on it since 4.5…running perfectly.

I also have two Dual G5 2.7s with FC 5, 6.0.3 and 6.0.6 all running perfectly.

I have an Intel MacPro with three versions on it as well.

I have never had an issue working this way. But I always clone my drive before the upgrade to be sure if something goes batty. Only time I have had to go back to a clone was after upgrading to Snow Leopard on one of my Intels. Two days and I went back.

So bah humbug boys…you can in fact run several versions of FCP and the rest on the same computer….and some times it comes in darn handy, and I have been doing it since Final Cut 2.0.
