  • FCS2, BMD 6.2 – No realtime video output 720p25/60 10 bit

    Hi,

I am hoping that someone can shed some light on this for me, as I have been banging my head against a brick wall here.

On Friday, I picked up our new copy of Final Cut Studio 2, and despite my own rules regarding this, excitement overtook me and I installed it in the middle of a job….. (Not the smartest idea, I know.)

now, my process has gone like this.
    install FCS2
open existing projects – they all work fine – realtime playback is working ok.
start having a look at ProRes – ProRes will not play back in realtime.
run BMD Decklink 6.2 updater (without uninstalling)
    open FCS2 again.
    – ProRes sequence will play out in realtime (dropping frames every now and then)
    – 720p25/60 10bit uncompressed sequence will not play back in realtime (via Decklink set as 720p60 10 bit)
    check my Audio/Video settings
    check external video settings
    check timeline settings
    uninstall 6.2 – reinstall 6.2 – no luck
    uninstall 6.2 – reinstall 6.1 – no luck
    uninstall 6.1 – reinstall 6.2 – no luck
    uninstall 6.2
    delete FCS2 preferences
    delete QuickTime preferences
run Cocktail to delete caches, repair permissions etc
    start up FCS2
    check my Audio/Video settings
    check external video settings
    check timeline settings
    – no luck

so, since doing my software upgrade, my system no longer has the ability to playback 10 bit uncompressed 720p25/60 – despite the fact that it has been able to do this flat out for the last 2 years or so.

    any ideas?

sorry, here is the data that I did not add here.
    G5 Dual 2ghz / 4.5GB RAM / 5.6TB XServe RAID via Fibre Channel / Decklink HD
output is via Decklink Component to Sony HD monitor.

    Same kind of problem here.

Captured 720P 8bit @59.94 and was getting dropped frames on capture after about 3mins..

. Could not figure it out as before upgrade to FCS2 and BM6.2 I captured 10bit the same rez upto 12 min clips and was fine.

I even layed one clip ontop of another in the timeline with animated transparency and it played fine in 5.1.4 and BM6.1

Found out my raid even though I said just extended had in fact format “journaled”

so re-formatted raid to just OSX Extended, and thought that the end of it.

Nope… still won’t play back 2 streams from the raid but it did before :-/ Cant test re-capture as the deck was just on hire.. :-/

SO seems its not the raid… but fcp or bm.. wierd.
FCP did report playback was due to DISK SPEED in big red letters..

Oh and to add.. I wiped the osx disk prior to this and did a new osx fcs2 bm 6.2 install fresh.. so no upgrades.

I’m not the only one having problems with final cut 6 and 6.2 drivers and black magic support is being unusually quiet which doesn’t help their customers (US) at all in a time of great need.

IS this the same issue you have? or another issue? care to share?

    I’m in PAL land..

    They DEFINITELY need that.

I’m sick of posts of known problems getting unanswered around here.

the problem I have specifically with my multibridge extreme with 6.2 and fcp 6:

capturing 10-bit or 8-bit SD uncompressed there is no audio.

also the log and capture app is sluggish and I get the color wheel
from 4 seconds (with SD) or up to 16 seconds (with HD) when logging.

If they would fix that, I’d be a happy editor.

tried switching to and from audio inputs?

I just read about that from Keith.

That would probably do it, but I switched back to my other system drive running fcp 5.04 and blackmagic 6.1 so I can work in confidence in front of my clients.

I will wait until black magic straightens out this problem in the easy setups (they should have posted this fix immediately)

Easy guys. Lets not turn this into a BlackMagic bashing session until we can figure out what the cause of the issue is.

now, I appreciate you both responding to my post, but it looks like we are talking about three seperate problems with the FCS2/BMD6.2 combination. you both have mentioned issues with capturing. my issue is with playback only.

Some more information on the issue that might shed some light…
    – QuickTime is v7.1.6

    – Disk Speed test on the side of my raid that I am using is
    – 253.6MB/s Read
    – 180.5MB/s Write

    – and on a weird note, I can put my 720p25 footage into a 10bit PAL anamorphic timeline, and play it out in realtime without dropping frames.

My suspicion here is that FCP 6.0 has taken a bit of a different view as to what the system is capable of in realtime. I am going to have a bit of a dig and see what I can find.

    Cheers

    Alister
