FCS 2 PAL & NTSC
I have a project shot in PAL and NTSC, the final output needs to be NTSC and I have no budget for hardware conversion. The PAL footage includes, whip pans, snap zooms, etc. I’ve been watching the FCP 6 Demo and understand the new Open Format Timeline will handle virtually any format including PAL and allow you to mix formats. Does it actually convert other formats to the sequence pre set format.
Has anyone experimented with this, can I truly dig PAL and NTSC, edit and output a NTSC tape or make a QuickTime for DVD and web distribution with good quality. What’s the caveat, if any?

From what I can see, and I’ve not gone in depth yet, the new timeline is better than FCP5 at conversion, but still jerkier than my plugin. It might be acceptable, it might not.

So that means the FCP 6 is doing conversion on the fly? How are the rendering times?

While just dropping a PAL clip into an NTSC timeline might be acceptable for some people, I would convert it using either the Nattress Plugins or Compressor 3. You’ll want to run some tests and compare the footage/rendering times.
