  • FCPX’s Mask effect does not adjust!

Posted by Shea a.j. Comfort on June 21, 2012 at 1:05 am

    Hello Everyone,

I am trying to use the matte effect to cut out the edges of a shot in FCPX 10.0.5.

I have a basic clip in the main storyline. I have a connected clip above it. I have selected the upper clip and applied the Mask effect to load it. It now shows in the viewer with the four adjustment circle at the corner of the effect in the viewer. So, far so good. However, any attempt to move the four corners circles does nothing. They each show a little “+” sign in them when clicked but do not move so I cannot adjust the mask…

I have trashed FCPX prefs, and rebuilt the permissions and restarted 2x. Nothing helped.

What am I doing wrong? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Thank you.

I’m afraid I don’t have advice, butd I just experienced the same problem today, also on 10.0.5. Haven’t had this problem previously. My guess is it’s a bug (and a not insignificant one at that) in 10.0.5.

If anyone has a solution I’d love it as well.

What format is your project and media? The mask tool won’t work in standard definition.

    All the best,

    Tom

Thanks, Tom. I hadn’t realized it. Solved my “bug” at least; I don’t know about Shea. Every other project I’ve used the mask on has been HD.

It seems odd that the mask won’t apply to SD footage.

Exact same problem!!! Am trying to feather edges using the Mask filter, the same four points turn up but they won’t budge when I click on them – so frustrating! I just updated to 10.0.5 today so am thinking it must be a bug.

I had the same thing, just grab a third party mask. Alex4d has a bunch of them.

Well, my project is in SD, so I guess that is the “problem”? Seems really dodgy that that would be the case, as I am sure there are more than just myself who still are using an SD camera (until we can upgrade) and would need to be able to use a mask in FCPX… wow.

Thanks for the third-party recommendations and everyone’s help.

    I appreciate it.
