I’m interested to see what tips or techniques people are using with FCPX and if there’s anything people might like to share.

Despite considering myself an “experienced” FCPX user, there’s still an awful lot to learn!

Still getting used to the idea of “rejecting” portions of clips…seems like it could be a powerful way to create selects.

    Steve,

Did you see, or already know about the search method for Favorites and Rejected clips? (along with searching by clip type)

Clip Skimming is one of my faves.
I work with a ton of Compound Clips.
    Very helpful 🙂

While I use a lot of Keywords and Collections, I wasn’t aware you could, or should rename Favorites. The searching capabilities are a nice addition.

    These spring to mind.

Assign unmapped keyboard shortcuts. “Expand / Collapse all audio” for all clips in the timeline and “export to apple device” are commands I use all the time.

Unplug the mouse and use a trackpad.

To select a clip, don’t click on it like FCP7, hover the curser above it and press “C”. Makes editing a whole lot smoother and stops the playhead jumping around.

You can turn off timeline thumbnails and waveforms (for all ‘track appearances’) in the timeline index’s role panel. This should help performance on slower machines.

Learn to use the timeline index to navigate the timeline.

Use Keyword Collections sparingly and Smart Collections excessively

I’ve only recently started using favourites and it’s much more useful than I imagined

I agree that favorites is a great tool for logging. It’s aaaalmost a magic bullet for me. My biggest concern with favorites is that, if you accidentally press the U key (conveniently located next to the I key), you lose all your favs in a clip. Yep, I know I can remap the key or undo it – but if you (or a ripe young assistant editor) are unaware that it happened, you could be seriously bit in the caboose.

I have been adding keywords to selects and adding notes to those keys – esp for interviews. I then favorite the Keywords ranges so I can treat them like subclips. Just an FYI, for those working this way, there is a bug that occurse if if you add a second keyword to the same range as the previous keyword, you lose the note.

Last, I’m combining groups of keywords in smart collections for easy searching.

Likewise, I add some keyboard shortcuts. One of the big ones for me is I make “Open in timeline” opt-T.

Also, I make new shortcuts for waveform and vectorscope that are more in line with cmd-7.

    ctrl-cmd-7 is waveform
    opt-cmd-7 is vector

makes for quick moving between the two and also for turning off the monitor when things start to slow down.
