  • FCPX Trial Ver Crashes when an Effect is added to a Clip (APPLE JOKE SHOP)

    System setup as follows

    1. New clean HDD
    2. Clean Install of OSX 10.6.8
    3. Run Software updates to ensure system is at current level
    4. No other Applications installed
    5. Download FCPX Trial and clean install

    6. FCPX trial running with clips on timeline ALL OK

    7. Add an Effect from the Effect browser and PCPX Crashes

    8. Send Crash report to Apple as requested.

    9. Reopen FCPX and if any attempt to open the clip on the timeline either by clicking on the clip or selecting it from the Project browser causes FCPX to immediately crash again.

    10. Project is now UNUSABLE due to inability to trash the clip with the Effect causing the problem

    11. I must have forwarded AT LEAST 20+ Crash reports to Apple, I have demonstrated this BUG can be REPEATED TIME AND TIME again.

    12. I booked a call with Apple Support but have never known such stupidity in all my life. Their agent just didn’t listen to what I was telling him, he offered no constructive advice. Thinking it could be a corrupt download I had already downloaded a SECOND time and did a complete reinstall after trashing the first, but this was all he could offer.

Then came the JOKE, he said I wasn’t really entitled to any product support and I would need to pay for his support. It is A TRIAL version I explained but he was having none of it, WHAT A KNOB HEAD.

I now have a Trial copy of FCPX which is USELESS, are Apple on a suicide mission of late ??????

I WONT BE WASTING MY MONEY ON THIS RUBBISH certainly not.

If you have ANY ideas for how I can get ANY sense from Apple please let me know.

    Regards

    Fred

I have the same problem. I’ve been able to go in and delete the clip with the effect before the crash, but it’s a race before the crash happens. It seems to me that the crash happens when the details of the clip are loaded in the inspector, so turning that off might help you get in there quicker. Of course, this means effects are essentially useless in FCP X and I’m not sure how useful the program is overall without them.

After getting used to the new interface, I think I like FCP X, but they have to make it stable before I’ll shell out money for it (I’m not going to pay for beta software). I’d rather something that is stable and has fewer features than something with a lot of features that crashes all the time.

I agree Chris, I too am not prepared to invest in funding Apple’e developments.

I keep wondering if there is any relationship between this Bug being tied to the fact that there is no copy of Motion 5 loaded (Separate purchase) In my opinion there shouldn’t be because this Trial version ought to run as a stand alone product and I would hope it is exactly the same as the full paid up version but with a time period.

If there are any of you guys out there with the FUL PAID UP version of FCPX and are having this same problem could you post please.

Also could you say if you have Motion 5 installed too.

    Regards

Sorry to hear you guys are having problems. FCPX has been rock solid for me. Can you tell us what kind of media you are working with? Frame size, codec, and what your machine is (RAM, graphics card, etc).

    Solid for me as well.

Total of 2 crashes in the first 100 days of use. FAR less than most new software re-writes of this magnitude.

I’ve even been able to get X to run on a machine it’s not SUPPOSED to run on (doesn’t have an open-CL compatible video card) and it’s stable there.

Are you running it under SnowLeopard or Lion? Lion appears to have more issues, but that’s just what I’ve read on the net, no real experience in crashes so I don’t know how to advise.

Media (I’ve had issues with both):
    – h.264 from Canon 60D at 1080p 29.97 fps with 48 kHz PCM audio. Transcoded by FCP X to ProRes (both full ProRes and Proxy files). Both are in Quicktime containers as expected.
    – DV (16:9 anamorphic) at 29.97 fps with 48 kHz PCM audio in a Quicktime container. FCP X did create proxy files for this, I’m guessing since I have that selected in preferences (just playing with FCP X to see how it works, so no specific reason for this).

    My machine:
    – 2088 Mac Pro
    – 2 x 2.8 GHz Quad Core CPU
    – 10 GB RAM
    – NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB Video
    – OS X 10.7.1

I’m just using the trial of FCP X 10.0.1). The crashes only occur when using effects. Sometimes I can add effects and not get a crash, but after a couple of effects I always get a crash. Once I get a crash, anytime I select that clip in the storyline, I get the crash.

I’ve submitted bug reports to Apple on this. I really like the program, but I’m not going to pay for it until it’s stable. When it is stable, though, I do plan to purchase it and Motion.

Do you have FX Factory Trial PlugIns installed? I had the same problem until I uninstalled these and afterwards no problems anymore….
Also maybe Console.app or the crash-report could point you to the cause.

    Hi Lads for info …

    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro5,1
    Processor Name: Quad-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.4 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 8
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per processor): 12 MB
    Memory: 8 GB
    Processor Interconnect Speed: 5.86 GT/s
    Boot ROM Version: MP51.007F.B03

    Brand new clean HDD installed

Clean OS 10.6.8 with all software updates from Apple

    No other Apps installed

    Clean install of FCPX Trial.

    Clips

    H264, Linear PCM 1920 x 1080i, 25 Fps,

    DVC PAL, Linear PCM, 720 x 576, 25Fps

Bill, Gregor, are you using Full paid version and do you both have Motion 5 Installed. As Chris has mentioned this system is only crashing when an Effect is added to a timeline clip. Also there are some Effects that work just fine and do not cause the system to crash. I keep thinking, as it seems related to Effects could it be that certain Effects are looking for a service from Motion when they are invoked ???

I have looked around lots of places on the Webb including the Apple forum and this appears to be a VERY VERY big problem throughout.

I have sent at least 20+ Crash reports to Apple myself but as normal they just disappear into the
    black hole.

My gripe is this, if so many people are experiencing this problem then it should be courteous for Apple to at least acknowledge and put out a statement. This would stop all the bad press from the users and prevent the need for us all to keep seeking unnecessary solutions.

Gregor are FX Plugins installed normally with FCPX ?

I have Motion installed and a paid copy of FCPX.
Sorry, I’m not a native english speaker, what do u mean?: Gregor are FX Plugins installed normally with FCPX ?

I saw your specs but thought Chris Gordon might get something out of this.
But on the web it seems to be a regular problem with the trial, so Apple has to post a fix, I suppose.

Other possibility: you could buy Motion (I heard it was worth the money) and test your theory :=)

Hi Gregor, thanks for your assistance.

My comment re FX was related to your previous post where you said

“Do you have FX Factory Trial PlugIns installed? I had the same problem until I uninstalled these and afterwards no problems anymore…. ”

I haven’t intentionally installed these and just wondered if they got installed during the FCPX installation.

It is interesting that you have the paid up version and also Motion 5 installed I am somehow thinking they Both FCPX and Motion need to coexist concurrently which might explain why your system isn’t suffering the crashes I am seeing.

Good, I might risk the costs and purchase Motion first then see if that cures the problem then if OK I will go ahead and purchase FCPX paid ver.

    Fred
