FCPX max size for a project file
Posted by Daniel Bernard on July 17, 2013 at 7:35 pmHello everyone,
I have a project that takes for even loading (like it’s been over 30 minutes, and it still on that loading screen). I tried different things, to no avail and then noticed that the CURRENTPROJECT file is, by itself, over 400mb, the biggest currentproject I’ve ever encountered so far.
Has anyone has any input my my theory that the project is just too heavy?By the way, I work on a good system, two 2.4Ghz Quadcore Intel Xeon with 12Gb 1066 Mhz DD3 RAM.
OSX 10.8.4., latest FCPX Version
Thank you all for your help
Dan

July 17, 2013 at 7:36 pmThat’s extremely large. I might try moving or deleting any analysis files and see if that helps.

July 17, 2013 at 7:43 pmNo analysis file in the project. It’s just a very effect heavy 45 minutes show for TV.
The problem I have now is that it’s not opened. The fact that I’ve detached audio for the whole show seems to make it A LOT heavier. So, to you too it seems like the size of the currentversion size could be what’s keeping me from loading the project?
I’m just trying to figure out what’s going wrong since we have a full season to deliver 🙂Dan

July 17, 2013 at 7:57 pmI would check for project file corruption by trying to copy it to another drive and seeing if the copy completes as quickly as you expect a 400mb file to copy. Are there and backup versions? Are they a similar size?

July 17, 2013 at 8:11 pmIt copies super fast, as expected and yes, the backup file is roughly the same size.
I feel it’s really a size limitation on the part of the software. I made a quick test and was able to open in a relatively reasonable amount of time a 400mb, a 410mb, a 415mb, but the 422mb won’t open, it hangs for ever. They are all the same project with me just adding a little things to make it heavier and heavier.
So for anyone wondering, there is a 420mb cap on Project size, even though it’s never mentioned anywhere in the documentation!

July 17, 2013 at 9:05 pmGreat find, might be worth submitting a bug report. How much ram do you have?

I would absolutely submit a bug report. They need/want to know stuff like this…

July 18, 2013 at 7:25 amMaybe it is the heavy usage of effects.
I have some projects which don’t contain any audio or video but lot of titles and effects and it takes forever to load them.
So you may keep FCPX open over night to see what happened next morning. If there is a crash you will have at least a log with the reasons. You may use my myFiles (https://www.spherico.com/filmtools/myFiles/) to analyze your project regarding used files and effects.
And for sure submit a bug report to https://developer.apple.com/bug-reporting/.
You have to start a developer account (which is free). But you will get a “ticket number” and can track your bug.I know above doesn’t help at all in your situation.
