There’s been a lot of speculation. It’s pretty simple to figure out why Apple did what it did.

    10,000 (FCP Studio) prof. editing stations x $900 = $9,000,000
    20,000 (FCP Studio) prof. editing stations x $900 = $18,000,000

    500,000 (FCPX + Motion 5 + Compressor) x $400 = $200,000,000

The numbers may be a little off, but you get the picture.

They had $7.3 billion in net profit this year, double what they did last year…this after dropping the FCS suite.

The price per sale is based on what you could buy FCPX + Motion 5 + Compressor; and Final Cut Studio. If you just buy Final Cut Pro 7, the price may be a little less. Also, there may be site license discounts, etc. So the price per sale may be a bit inflated.

The sales numbers are rank speculation. That’s why I used two numbers for presumed number of sales. Only Apple knows how many licenses for Final Cut Pro are out there. Hence, the guess. But really, the total market for the level of features on Final Cut Studio are not likely as large as you may think, given the competition from Adobe, which includes After Effects and Photoshop in its bundle. In fact, the sales numbers for FCP may have slightly declined over the past few years – again rank speculation – given Adobe’s strong arguments for using their bundle. If this is the case, the smart decision from purely a short term profit and loss perspective is to lower the price, call it “pro” and go after a larger mass market.

I am not saying or arguing that this is the correct business decision.
