  • FCPX issue: can’t move keyframes accurately in timeline

Posted by Nick Natteau on January 14, 2012 at 2:48 pm

Doing an animated zoom on a still in my FCP X timeline. When I highlight a keyframe to move it, I find that I can’t move it accurately forward or backward in the timeline.

As I try to move the keyframe forward in the timeline, my keyframe moves from frame 2 to 5 to 7 to 10 to 13 to 15 to 18.

Is this another FCPX bug that had not yet been resolved?

    Hi Nick,

Using the pop-up Video Animation Editor in the timeline, I’m able to move keyframes frame accurately as long as I’m zoomed in on the clip. With a keyframe selected, you can use the , and . keyboard shortcuts to move back and forth a frame at a time.

    Hi Ian,

Thanks very much for your help. Actually I tried that, but the frame counter is showing me moving one frame at a time even though I’m actually doing that. Instead the frame counter on the timeline reads: 1…3…5…8…11…13…15…18. Really weird, that’s why I’m wondering if it’s just another bug that will hopefully soon be addressed.

    Hi Nick,

That definitely sounds weird. This is my usual 2-step remedy for buggy stuff…

Trash preferences with Preference Manager. Download it here if you haven’t already: https://www.digitalrebellion.com/prefman/

Open up Disk Utility and repair permissions on the Macintosh HD.

Not sure if this is on point, but theres a lot about the timeline that is “conditional” on your zoom level. For example, the time markers change increments as you zoom in and out.

Try going another level of zoom in and perhaps that may allow more precision?

If so it’s a classic case of “this is not a bug, it’s a feature!”

    YMMV,

    Good luck!
