FCPX archiving
I am researching archiving of FCPX libraries. Given FCPX can automatically create backups that are significantly smaller files and can be used to recreate projects, could I simply save the original movie files + the FCP backup files instead of saving whole FCP bundles/libraries?

You can as long as you maintain folder structure.
But even then a little elbow grease you can resurrect dismantled resources in no time.
I’ve had the displeasure of working with multiple drives and folders that was renamed.
As long as you have the original (I only work with original footage) imported it all comes back even the Synced files.
This got smoother after 10.1 for me.
For my evening classes I got the students to hand in XML files instead of packaging.
As long as they maintain resource links (I provide 99% of the working files) and send external links to my Dropbox. -
Drives are *so* cheap today I’d be very leery of saving a few GB with a shortcut like that. You really want the entirety of the Library structure with at least the media in your final edit. This can be done in at least two easy ways:

Um… sorry, but what exactly, in your eyes, is the difference between the two?? The backup files are nothing other than an older version of the actual library, sans any media that may be contained within the original library, but referencing said media. I don’t see how you expect to save any space with the one or the other.
Simply consolidate all your projects and used media into the library and archive THAT. Simple.

That’s what I do. That’s what I LOVE about the Libraries in FCP X. Everything I need is in one neat little package that I can drag and drop onto my archive drive and know that everything I need is in there if I ever need to work on the project again. Dead simple!
