FCPX 50 fps..??
Posted by Tahir Ramzan on October 8, 2011 at 9:00 pmHi there.
Got a problem that i canT solve. I own a Sony HVR Z1E. Problem is that when i import into FCP X, it wantS to import at 25 fps or 25i..I had same problem with FC Express. Is there anyway to import original footage without loosing frames..have no idea if i have explained my problem well, but its been bugging me for over a year now and cant find a proper answer. On my cheap laptop with cheap Pinnacle software it imported footage as per original camera footage. On my Mac it seems impossible.
However footage from my Canon 7D seems to import as per original footage into FCP X.
Help..!Tahir Ramzan

October 8, 2011 at 9:18 pmI checked the specs on that camera.
It shoots 50i, which is actually 25fps.
50i is 50 interlaced fields per second.
The 7D shoots progressive. So there are no fields…its 25 fps straight up.

Thanks for the quick reply. I think what my problem is that i want to keep video look that i recorded in originally, instead of the film look that it ends up importing in. Hence when i use my 7D, FCPX imports and keeps the “steady” video look, whereas the Sony imports at the “jittery” film look, which takes away the original smooth video look/format that i recorded in. To try an explain myself better, when i adjust shutter speed manually to around 25fps in the Sony, thats the look it gets imported into FCPX at, even if i recorded at 50 fps and above. I just want to keep my smooth Video look.
Again i hope what i have written makes sense. I am at odds here and Creative Cow is my last bet to understand this problem.

October 9, 2011 at 3:37 amI don’t own this camera, but according to the specs, it cannot shoot at 50fps. It shoots 25 fps, so I don’t know what else you expect from it. As I said before, 50i is 25fps.
From Sony
Recording format
1080/60i, 1080/50i, 480/60i (NTSC), 576/50i (PAL)
Play out/Down conversion format
1080/60i, 1080/50i, 480/60i (NTSC), 576/50i (PAL), 480/60p, 576/50p, -

October 9, 2011 at 10:18 am25i is the same format as you are recording, 25 interlaced frames = 50 frames, it isn’t losing any frames

Importing, capturing or L&T video can’t make losing frames.Tahir, you are mixing things up.
As John said, i25 and i50 is the same. Is what you get shooting interlaced (SD/HD) in any PAL country. That is 25 frames per second, which means 50 different images per second. That footage properly played is as smooth as p50 stuff.Your camera makes plain HDV, which is 1080i50 (in some places called i25) and should work in a 1080i50 time-line. To make it work on a Progressive project, the footage must be de-interlaced; thing that FCPX does automatically as soon as you drop the footage on the time-line.
Not sure, but I think there is nothing wrong with your footage. You are just watching interlaced stuff on a computer screen.
BTW, what are you shooting with the Canon, p25, or p50?
by any chance are you dropping the HDV stuff on a p50 project? That would probably make look the HDV stuff looks choppy compared with the p50 footage.

BTW: Don’t mess with Shutter speed. That basically will add or reduce Movement Blurs, but is not the way to deal with a workflow problem. -

October 9, 2011 at 4:39 pmHi Rafael
thanks for the info..As we are starting to get an understanding here. I can now explain better.
When i import into FCPX or FCP and then export at full quality, the image is always fuzzy. Never sharp. It will also never export at same setting as original movie. Hence i write about dropping frames. When you wrote “Don’t mess with Shutter speed. That basically will add or reduce Movement Blurs, but is not the way to deal with a workflow problem” Thats exactly what i meant. When i import or export it wants to give me the film look which is always around the 25fps..but outwith this i can never seem to export the movie extremely sharp as per original footage.
Maybe i need to go to a few classes as seem be at a loss on this one, even though i have a decent understanding of movie making and fps.
