FCPX 10.3 Woes Including Losing Metadata When Editing Between Libraries
Not very happy with the upgrade to 10.3 for many reasons despite improvements to Roles and Audio Lanes.
Probably the biggest challenge we are experiencing is that now we are unable to edit between libraries otherwise all the meta data is often lost when matching back to the source clip. We used to make a selection on a clip from a source library then edit to a project in a destination library no problem. Now if we do this and match the edited clip in the destination library project to the event area in the destination library, the source clip won’t have any metadata. FCPX is creating a duplicate with no markers or keywords etc. It was not this way until 10.3.
We’ve found that you have to move the clip manually to a destination library event, then source from that clip while in the destination library. This is not ideal especially if you are editing from a source library sequence and want to simply copy and paste pre-edited material to a destination library sequence like we often do.
The bigger rub is we use XMLs a lot for remote collaboration, they are light, easy to email and have always worked fine for simple cuts only edits. Now when we import an XML sequence and match to a source clip it has no metadata. We’ve tried many different settings and workflows, and have yet to find a consistent way to get around this issue, this is a major challenge to our workflow.
Finally, even moving sequences between libraries without XMLs, simply copying or moving them between libraries, we are having similar match back issues where the source clips are stripped of their metadata. This is not consistently happening so perhaps a simple tweak in workflow will work but we’ve tried many techniques and settings.
We have upward of 2000 hours of footage with four years of imbedded metadata, anyone else seeing this type of behavior where matching back reveals a clip devoid of metadata yet the clip in the project your matching from HAS metadata, you can see it in the timeline?

PS Some other 10.3 challenges and yes submitted Apple feedback:
– New tiny keyword editor window painful to use not scalable, we have hundreds of keywords
– Removal of color coding makes it hell to scan thru events with years of dense meta data
– Q attaching to storyline in timeline cues timeline GUI to the end of the sequence
