I work an a project where the director does a rough-cut himself in FCPX, which I then finish once it’s client approved.
For the director to get approval he needs to send the client a mp4 with certain specs. As he does not own Compressor he has to export a master Quicktime out of FCPX and use handbrake to compress it to the client’s specs.
As he is not the most computer savy guy, a lot of errors happen and I have do do a lot of telephone support.
I have now made myself a compressor setting that allows me to export what the client needs in one click.
I have also found out that if you create a “Share Destination” using a Compressor preset the settings of the “Share Destination” are independent from the compressor preset.
Meaning that, if you change the settings of the compressor preset, after you have used it to create a “Share Destination” within FCPX, the changes do not apply to the already created “Share Destination”.

That leads me to believe that maybe FCPX does store it’s own set of presets somewhere independent of Compressor’s settings. If I can find where those presets are stored, maybe I can give it to the director and he can one-click export the stuff to the client’s dropbox.

Getting the director to buy Compressor is not possible, because he’s already not happy that he had to get FCPX and do the editing himself.

    Thoughts anyone?

    Tanks

    Florian

    Florian,

What are the client’s required specs?

My guess is the following workflow does not require Compressor to be installed on the FCP X system. If you test it, let us know. Maybe your director can sway the client into accepting a standard H.264 movie at a lower resolution:

Add Export File to your destinations list. Change the format to Computer or any other option in that popup. You will then have two H.264 codec quality options, and lower resolution options.

So customizing the output is a bit limited. But it might work for the client.

Unfortunately that is not possible as the client has very specific specs laid out to be able to use the video in their intranet. x264, 560×315, 300kBit/sec (Audio and Video combined), streaming enabled

I can’t remember exactly where the file goes but Apple say on their about Compressor page that you can share Compressor settings with another FCPX user, even if they don’t have compressor installed.

“Whether you customise an existing Compressor setting in Final Cut Pro or create an entirely new setting, you can share the results with other Final Cut Pro editors — even if they don’t have Compressor installed on their workstations. Just send them a small settings file and have them copy it to the appropriate folder.”

Now it would be interesting where this “apropriate Folder” is.

Compressor keeps presets in .setting files. If these .setting files are in
    Your user name/Library/Application Support/Compressor/Settings/
…you can use them within Final Cut Pro X.

    From this article https://alex4d.wordpress.com/2012/12/07/fcpx-using-compressor-preset-as-custom-share-destinations/

Now if only we can access and tweak the built in Destinations, I’d love to tweak the Vimeo preset.
