FCP/DVDSP HDV to SD Disc Creation Workflow?

I’ve been doing a fair amount of searching here and in Apple’s discussion groups, and I canno seem to find the “answer,” perhaps one it seems several people are looking for regarding this workflow question.
My setup is Final Cut Studio on a dual 2.7 with 4.5 GB RAM, Tiger, all up to date. Camera is the Sony HDR-FX1
What I want to do is capture in native HDV, edit my project, and then create an 16:9 anamorphic SD DVD. Capturing and editing is fine, and print to tape works flawlessly. But I’m sturgglling to find the “best” way to prepare the project for SD disc creation. For a 55 minute HDV project, I’m seeing exporting times of 8 hours or so from FCP; similar from Compressor. I’ve also had trouble selecting the right export format to acheive the results I’m seeking (for example, when I selected DVD Best Quality 16:9 in Compressor, the resulting file was a horizontally squished 4:3 with black bars on left and right). Other times, Compressor just stops through it says its finished.
Ironially, a shorter project I did in iMoveHD exported automatically and flawlessly to iDVD, creating a great anamorphic DVD woth about 30 minutes of encoding for a 10 minute project.
BTW, I want to capture and edit in HDV so my projects are ready for HD-DVD when the technology comes to market – I’m aware I could otherwise convert in camera to DV quality – but that defeats the purpose to future proofing.
It may sound silly, but the other approach I was conisdering was to print my finished project to tape in HDV, recapture the downcoverted project in DV, add chapter markers, and make my SD DVDs as I usually do. Maybe three or four hours versus 8 or more, but are there quality issues in this approach?

I, too, am curoius about this. My company just purchased the Z1U cameras and I edit in SD video for the moment but we wanted to go HDV for the future to mix with HiDef down the road. I have noticed that working with HDV is great in itself but don’t mix it with anything else.
Thrang… it sounds as if you answered your own question. You’d be better off dumping to tape and recapturing in DV to create your DVD. You do know that you ca make a dup of your timeline that already has the markers, delete the video and audio, drop in your recaptured footage in the exact timecode and all your markers will still be there. A real time savings.
HDV is a whole different format – the thinking can not be the same as others. Its only compatible with itself.
