FCP7 Even HDV sometimes does not play smoothly, is my mac broke?
Hi, I have a 4*3Ghz macpro1,1 running Lion with 6GB memory and and a RAID 10 system (delivering around 60MS/s). I was having a problem with prores sometimes not playing smoothly and thought maybe the RAID was not fast enough (even though it is 4* faster than the ProRes bandwidth).
Now I am editing a HDV project and occasionally the footage is briefly pausing, I am wondering if there is something wrong with my mac, or if I need to reinstall Mac OS X.
Any advice woulds be spiffing;).

I make it a general rule to rebuild a startup disk about every year or any time there’s an upgrade to FCP or the OS. If not all sorts of weirdness seems to happen.
If you’ve not done this in a while, you might be really surprised how much snappier the whole computer becomes.

Thanks, top tip;). Is it possible to install application on another disk so you don’t have to reinstall everything?

Well one thing you can do to speed this process up next time is to create disk images which reside on a hard drive to install from. You can install the complete studio that way in about 30 minutes. You just mount them all at once.
But keeping a clean system makes a big difference in your happiness, that’s for sure.

OK, so I have done a fresh Lion install and installed FCP 7.0.3 and it still keeps on breafly stoping during playback. Maybe it is a hardware problem or maybe I should try Snow Leaperd.
