fcp7 corrupted playback with 1080p 23.98 prores HQ
I couldn’t find a post for this and the people I have talked to never seemed to have experienced this. when we try to playback the sequence, at times one clip here and there would start to flicker by switching back and forth between footage of a nearby clip. it jumps back and forth during playback.
I’m working on fcp7 with 1080p 23.98 proes HQ footage. all footage has the same specs and project and sequence are set up to those specs. all the media is saved into a local hard drive an not through an external now. i have talked to a tech guy and he said that the machine is fully capable of handling HQ footage. Also a project similar to what we are working on which is alot of media worked fine before.
i don’t understand what could be the problem. i was told it was something to do with the project in fcp7 and not the hardware, but could this be some kind of video card issue? has anyone ever experienced this? i thought that by making sure everything had the same specs, because there were some H264 that were imported and other strange codecs, that it would solve this jumping playback issue, but it still happens. any ideas on what to check? thanks.

I don’t know for sure, but it could be a hardware thing. You should be working off an external drive. Never edit on you OS drive, it will seriously bog down the processing power. Especially using the ProRes. Next, try rendering all your material into the same codec. Why are you using ProRes HQ? You gain nothing using it. Regular ProRes is all you need. ProRes HQ is best for material higher than 1080, like 2K and 4K film work.
Also, check to make sure you have plenty of RAM and that your drives have plenty of empty disk space on them. Once a drive reaches around 80% capacity, they will begin to slow down, causing some weird things in FCP.
I’m not sure, but I think a Firewire 800 drive should be fast enough to edit ProRes material. I’m working off a Fibre channel RAID 0, so its smoking fast. You just might not have enough beef.
You could also try offline editing using ProRes Proxy. The online back to ProRes.

Did you ever resolve the problem? I’ve got the same issue except I’m working in a 1080 23.98 Apple ProRes Proxy sequence and my media is on a RAID.This has now happened with two projects, one very large and the other small.
