FCP7 and Filters
Posted by Ken Pugh on August 29, 2009 at 7:01 pmSince upgrading to FCP7 some of my filters have stopped working in the same way – notably light rays – also some noise industry’s plugs have stopped working altogether – eg volumetrix.
Anyone else had trouble? Tried trashing prefs….
Cheers,
Ken

August 30, 2009 at 3:33 amDid you do a clean install of FCP and the OS?
Did you install all of your filters from scratch into FCP?

August 30, 2009 at 9:29 amI was waiting to do a clean instal onto a new drive with snow leopard…. so no, not yet. Just couldn’t wait for the FCP7 slow-mo feature I’m afraid!
I’ll do this next week and report back If there are still problems,
Cheers,
Ken.

Yes, that alone is worth the price of admission.

Have you tried updating your filters? You specifically mention some FX Factory plugins, and they have just updated the version to 2.0.9 to deal with Snow Leopard. However, Snow Leopard breaks their AE compatibility for the moment, so keep that in mind.Santiago

August 30, 2009 at 4:27 pmI only checked for volumetrix – and that is still at version 2, as before. Will check the others. But it seemed to me maybe FCP7 is handling certain filters in a new way? Light Rays, which I use a lot to brighten footage when it’s very underexposed (does a cleaner less noisy job than many other dedicated filters in my opinion) – I had to find a completely different set of parameters to get the brightening effect without getting the rays – and it still doesn’t seem to do it quite as well as before.
But then, I haven’t done a clean instal yet, as Walter pointed out, and I’m still on Leopard. I may have to wait anyhow as I’ve read snow leopard is not compatible with my SATA card.
Cheers,
Ken.

“Actually I found out this issue and it is fixed. Search the Cow forum for FX Factory and you will finds an updated link for 2.0.9. Remember to first delete the AE plugin from Application Support–> Adobe–> common–> plugins –> CS4.
Delete the 2 FX factory plugins and reinstall and all is bliss again in AE.

Have you gone into Color at all? I would never think to use Light Rays for that task but then if it works, I guess that’s what you go with. But Color does a hell of a job dealing with underexposed footage.
I think when you say Light Rays does a “cleaner” job that’s because it’s applying a small amount of blur to the footage so you don’t see the noise that is amplified when you brighten up an underexposed shot. You can do that using the 3 Way CC and a touch of Gaussian Blur or using the Blur node in Color.
