November 22, 2011 at 5:33 pm[Tina-Louise Smith] “but the Canon sales agents have told me my FCP 6.0.6 on my G5 should be able to work with the footage that comes from the camera.”
They are wrong. Sorry, but it won’t. In order for FCP to convert the XF format (which is an MXF format offshoot) to ProRes in FCP, you need an Intel Mac. Period. A G5 will not do it. FCP will not even attempt the conversion. There is not enough power under the hood to perform this action.
[Tina-Louise Smith] ” People said the G5 would be really slow in transcoding the footage, but not how slow. “
You’ll have to find that thread for me…because I had a friend with a G5 who tried to import the footage and they couldn’t. I ended up doing it for them. AVCHD will convert to ProRes on a G5, but not inside of FCP. You need to use third party software like ClipWrap 2, and THAT will go very slow. Talking 2-3x ratio here. You shoot 10 min, it’ll take 20-30 min to convert.
[Tina-Louise Smith] “My G5 is all I can afford now, especially if I have to buy the camera.”
A G5 and that camera will not mix. Sorry.
[Tina-Louise Smith] “Does anyone know if the Canon XF100 can be ingested and transcoded into FCP 6.0.6 on a G5?”
It cannot. Sorry. I will like to say that I am VERY pleased to hear that you tested all of this before you bought. And are asking all these questions BEFORE you go out and shoot. It is so rare for people to do that, and as you see, VITAL that you do it before you paint yourself into a corner.
If you have to stick with your G5, then you need to stick to formats it can import. DVCPRO HD P2, using the HPX-170 or HVX200a cameras would be your best bet.

November 22, 2011 at 5:43 pmHallo Shane!
Thank you so so much! It is a relief to know what I am working with!
Even though it won’t work, I am happy knowing that.
Now I need an alternate plan.
Thanks for your suggestions, too!
Thanks once again!

November 23, 2011 at 9:53 amHi Chris, et al
So after some sleep (since I was working nearly 42 hours straight)… I’ve re-read your post and had a think…. I did not officially maintain the file structure since for each cam there were 2 memory cards used, and thus two folders called “Contents” which after I copied I renamed “Contents A” /”B” etc…. so I thought… hmmm might this be it? I renamed them back, moved them into new folders called A/B and then selected each “Contents” folder… and poof! It worked…. Wow that’s a bit touchy but at least the issue is solved…. Thanks for your help gang!
