Hey Everyone. New to FCP6 from AVID. Immediately noticed interlacing issues. Of course, apple says its normal but to me with more than 15 years experience, it’s not!! And from reading around, it seems that others have similar issues.

Here’s what’s happening and I’m not sure why exactly. Two different projects… One was DVCPRO50 and the other is DV NTSC. Both were shot interlaced as lower field 4:3.

For the DV — On an interlaced timeline, the footage looks horrible. Jagged edges and ripping everywhere. In fact, the only way the footage looks good is if I put the interlaced footage on a progressive timeline. De interlacing the footage on a progressive timeline still causes the same interlacing effect.(don’t understand why.)

However, the opposite is true for the DVCPRO50. The interlaced footage only looks good on an interlaced timelime. The footage will look good on a progressive timeline only if I deinterlace.

What is going on here??? Anyone shed some light?

Sure!!! How precisely are you monitoring video Jay? If you don’t have a video I/O card or device and are only monitoring via computer display(s), you’re most likely going to see the interlace. It has nothing to do with a need to deinterlace, so don’t go there…

So, tell me more about how you’re monitoring and then I’ll give you some tips.

    Read this.

Then crack open that useless manual that came with FCP and lookup the wonderful diagrams that show how to connect a video monitor to your Mac. Then find a CRT and hook it up according to one of those diagrams. You may need to buy a capture card.

    David,

Thanks for responding so promptly. I am using my computer monitor as the primary monitor. However, I do get the fact that computer monitors are progressive and will show scan lines. But, I do have a panasonic studio monitor hooked up to a Sony DSR45, which trans codes the DV signal and outputs it to the monitor. When I am still on a frame, the monitor is flashing like crazy all over the place… which I assume is part of this interlacing issue.

Please keep in mind, I do come from the AVID world (and various other softwares over the years) and I have NEVER seen anything like this (Even while viewing a computer monitor) If you guys tell me this is nothing to be concerned about, I won’t be concerned. But I have never seen this before and some of my stuff does go to broadcast so I am a little concerned and it seems that others are complaining about FCP6 opposed to earlier versions.

    So, am I crazy?

That doesn’t sound like a it’s working very reliably Jay, so I don’t think you should in fact be relying upon it, especially for broadcast work. Since I’ve never routed firewire through a deck for monitoring I’m certainly not the right person to help you sort out any issues with that setup, but if it doesn’t hold still when you pause, it sure seems like you have a tracking issue, which is something you need to work out.

And, if you’re cutting video for broadcast, you’d best get yourself a real hinest to goodness video I/O card or device, otherwise you’re operating blind.

    Hi,

Is it possible to create an FCP project with 1 second of material from each of the DV and the DVCPRO media. Check if the project still contains the interlacing issue and then upload all 3 components (project and the 2 media files) somewhere to make it available for download.

I would be happy to take a look at it if you are willing.
