    Dear gurus,

Am I right in believing that FCP6 now has shake’s optical flow as an option for the speed changed, and time remapped clips?

If this is so how does one access that in preference to the old method of frame blending?

    Thanks for the info

No, that’s not in FCP, but Motion3 or Compressor.

    Hope this helps,

Just saw a demo of this tonight at the Los Angeles FCP user group meeting.

Tip of the day if you’re going to use optical flow: It generates HUGE render files. Depending on your format (SD or HD) these files can be many ,many gigabytes. There’s an option to delete this renders. Use it frequently for completed work or you’re gonna run out of space.

    The results look great.

    Mark,
I don’t understand this. The render files don’t use the same codec that you are working with (like in FC)?

Let me clarify: Not renders per se, but analysis “Cache” files.

Go to preferences, click on “Cache”. At the bottom you’ll see settings for “Optical Flow retiming”. They added a button for “Delete retiming cache” because these files grow to immense proportions very quickly. It’s recommended you delete these as soon as you’ve made your timing choices.

Thanks Mark, now I got it. I just installed FCS2 few days ago and I haven’t had time to open the applications except FC.
    Cheers,

that’s interesting Mark, is Shake the same?

I wonder what makes the cache files so enourmous? Surely it’s not creating motion vectors for each pixel???

This toolset (Optical flow) comes from Shake, so I’m guessing it operates in a similar manner.
I don’t know the science behind why it’s so big, but it is!
