Does FCP6 benefit from an 8 core Mac Pro or should I just stick to a 4 core model ?

And does FCP6 also take advantage of a higher performance graphics card like the ATI 1900XT or the NVIDIA FX4500 ?

What about RAM ? Is 4GB generally good enough ?

Ya know something? I just clocked my 8 core just rendering in FCP in a DV sequence. It was using up to 765% of the CPU… meaning it was faster than any 4 core.

I don’t think it was doing this much heavy lifting before 6.0.1 and the pro apps update… just thought I’d peek and see today for some unknown reason, and was pleasantly surprised.

The GPU comes into play when you use the new fx plugs… so in that instance it would take advantage of the X1900’s extra power. I think the FX4500 is probably overkill. Motion will really take advantge of the X1900 as will Color BTW…

Missed you this year at NAB man…

Rendering, what rendering? If I blink I miss it and think I didn’t do it. It is that fast.

It’s funny. I’ve got a quad-core Mac Pro, with 4gigs of RAM and the X1900 XT. I still get crazy slow downs with Motion. Granted I’m still using 5.x of the studio suite, but come on! I should have very simple SD Motion projects, using 8 bit color, slow down my computer so much that I have to leave, and come back 5 min later and finally have Motion respond to me again. And HD projects? Forget about it. Unless I’m sticking to text only with less than 3 groups (layers) HD projects are almost unusable. Maybe I’m expecting too much, as I never used anything other than LiveType.

BTW, I consulted the Cow before I installed anything, and followed a very strict guideline for installing applications AND hardware.

PS I’ve noticed that when my Mac Pro gets bogged down, especially with Motion, I get strange, empty folders in my Preferences folder, with nonsensical file names.

Having said this, this doesn’t happen enough to deter me from using Motion. Overall, it’s faster, and I can achieve things I never thought I’d be able to.

What exactly are the folders, where exactly are they located and what exactly are their non-sensical names?

    All the best,

I’ve heard several times that you generally want 1gb of memory per core you have as a general minimum to get the most out of an 8 core system.

    Hi.

Why is FX4500 overkill. Price and performance do not mach ?

Well, if you’re doing lots of Motion work and tight timelines… the money is well worth it.
