    Yo Herd!

Is there an issue with using a FCP 5 project in FCP 6 that also needs to be able to go back to FCP 5 again? I realize that you need to not have it update the project when you open it. And I realize any of the new Studio effects/features would not translate… just on a basic level, is this ok to do?

I would like to have FCP 6 installed on one of our systems to start playing with it but still want to be able to use it for our FCP 5 projects..

    Thanks!

I don’t have 6 yet ,but if it behaves the same as my 5.1 does then when you choose no to the update to the newer version it closes final cut.

The only way to open a 5 project in 6 is to update it and then save it after your work is done.

You can open a 5 project in 6 and then close it with out saving it and it remains as 5, but that doesn’t do any good if you are working on it.

FCP Projects are not backwards compatible as we explained in another thread just down below. Once you update the project to FCP 6, you will not be able to open it in FCP 5.

If you don’t save the project file, it will open back in 5 again… but then, you’d not be able to work on the project and have those changes saved from the FCP 6 station.

Wow, this is a lame issue with FCP – limits one to only a upward progression… Avid has some issues with this but you are can always open a seq from previous versions (at least within a few releases). Kinda forces you to go all or nothing…

Walter (or anyone else with multiple systems) how do you handle upgrading a whole facility when a new release comes out?

    Thanks for the help!

We usually have the engineer do the upgrades to the 3 edit suites at night.

The customization suite (where we add the 800# and lay to tape) is next in line the next day or night. Usually we are customizing thing that were comple several days to a week ago so they woul not have be done in the newer software

The ingestion suite does not need to be upgraded right away because we can digitize it 5.1.4 and then work in 6.

Finally the 4 edit suite which is basically a stand alone suite and projects don’t move from the main suites to that one very often.

The only way we’ll or any other NLE software wlll get new features is to have a sitution where you can always go up (like you can with any version of FCP) but not go BACK… you can open any sequence ever made in any version of FCP in a later version of FCP. But once saved in that later version you cannot go back to the earlier version.

To upgrade, you do it all at the same time. It’s not that tough. A lot of folks will wait until there’s been an update or two to the software first though… However. I’ve been running here on the new studio, and it’s rockin’ for me… love it.

You can export an XML file from say FCP 6 to open in FCP 5… that would allow you to go backwards…

That is Avid…this is FCP. Avid is the only NLE that I know of that allows you to open projects from newer versions on older systems. But that is because Avid is the king of media management, and has a unique file structure.

FCP isn’t backwards compatible, but as said, exporting MXLs works great if you need to go back to older versions.

So…. if you open an Avid project file in an earlier version and that file had used features, or filters or effects or something new that was only avialable in the later version, what happens?

I remember this (XML export) being the popular work around during the 4.5 to 5 switch, and it worked fine. Obviously there are some things lost in the switch, but it sounds like you’ll be able to keep it to cuts only until you’re ready to finish on 6. It should work well.
    Peace,
