  • FCP5 No audio playback when logging in Digitizer

    Hi Folks-
    FCP 5.01 w/G5 Dual 2.0 Tiger/ Decklink Sp
-like it says: when scrubbing/playing audio off Beta deck thru digitizer, I can’t hear any audio:
    – “preview” SELECTED in audio/video submenu
-proper audio channel selected to digitize
-FCP VU meters move, so FCP “sees” the audio
    BUT
when I actually digitize the clip, it (the CLIP, NOT the DECK) RECORDS and PLAYS back the sound OK (ie, I CAN hear it once it is a digitized clip) in the Project
    Other notes:
Just upgraded from FCP 4.5/panther (still actually on another drive) – system worked fine there.
    Thoughts?

The audio is, by default, intentionally MUTED to the Mac’s speaker output during Log and Capture.

So you should normally monitor the audio directly from the camcorder or deck you are using to capture. (It is the preferred method.)

    CAUTION:
Many people have reported that noise or “pops” appear in the captured clips if the Mac’s internal audio is left on WHILE capturing… so may want to choose “Off During Capture.”

However, there is a way you can turn ON the Mac’s speaker if you really WANT to:
    —————————————————————-
    In FCP4x and earlier:

Final Cut Pro (menu) > Audio/Video Settings… > Capture Presets (tab)

“Duplicate” the Capture Preset you are now using, when the window opens rename it (I added “MacAudioOn” to the file name).

Click open the “Advanced” button in the Audio section and turn speakers to “ON during Capture.”
The Mac speakers/audio-out will now play Audio during the preview in the Log and Capture window.
    —————————————————————-
    In FCP5x and later:

    In the Record Tool:
Clip Settings, near audio buttons, choose: Preview: “ON”

    Thanks for the details Matt-
As I indicated, I already HAD turned on the “PREVIEW” check in the clip settings window in the Log/Capture Section – and still NO tape-sourced audio would play thru my Decklink card to my (audio) monitor during screening. It worked flawlessly in FCP4.5. The work-around I discovered, with ideas from you, is I can at least set the G5 System>Preferences>Sound OUTput to “Internal” (instead of thru my Decklink audio) and I can then hear the tape audio playing off my beta deck thru my tinny Mac speaker. Better than no audio, but something is goofy here. I am talking with Decklink tech support to see if they have any ideas, since this seems to suggest the Decklink card is the problem, not the Mac…?
Speaking for myself, I MUCH prefer to hear audio during digitizing, since I need to invaribly ride levels as its being digitized off the deck, so I can ride the deck’s output on-the-fly. The “popping” problem you describe happens maybe once in 30 clips, so it seems worth the risk…
    regards
