  • FCP5 export to WinXP if filesize over 2GB, break the file to 2GB parts

Posted by Andras Csore on November 24, 2005 at 11:30 am

    Hi!

I export larger QTDV files to WinXP shared folders from FCP5
I mount the WinXP share via Finder, via SMB.
    All movies are self-contained.

If I export movies to Windows XP machine shared folder, and the file size is larger than 2GB, the exported movie breaked to 2GB parts.

    Created files:
    testmove3gb.mov (2GB size)
    tesmovie3gb-av1 (remained 1GB size)

the .mov is the first 2GB, the –av1 is the next 1GB size.
    (and so on, -av2, -av3, etc…)

I can play back the file with QTplayer in WinXP fine, and I can see in the video tracks, its use the –av1 part, etc…

    I CHECK the followings:

    1. If I export to local mac hdd (its export one 3GB .mov), and copy with Finder to WinXP share everything is okay!

    2. If I export any movies from QuickTime PRO, with SAVE AS function, its export one 3GB file to WinXP share fine!

    CONCLUSION:
The FCP5 (and probably all version of FCP?) is watch which way is the network share mounted, and if the share via SMB (not via AFP?) its break automatically the files to 2GB parts!

I think its something old compatibility mode, today is pointless.

Any workaround where can I switch off this breaking stuff in export?

    WHY ITS PROBLEMS:
    1. Today I think this not a problem, its something old compatibility mode
    2. The lot of –av1 files made the archiving and restoring to a nightmare
    3. Lot of PC sw-s (all proprietary) not recognize the –av1 parts, and use the only the .mov part, but works well any size of .mov-s.
    4. Export to local, and after manual (or semi manual, synch) copy is HUGH waste of time!

    System: FCP5, OSX10.4.x latest, DV-PAL, WinXP US, SP2

    Any solution welcome…

(one thing: I think about afp emulation in WinXP, but its not cheap, additional problems can come up, and I sure the problem in the FCP side)

There is a setting in the scratch disk setting to turn off… it limits the file sizes of exports to 2 gigs…

    Unfortunately not helped:

The settings was disabled, (by default)
and even if i set it enabled and limit to 10GB not effect,
    still 2GB chunks.

And as I try in previous:

The export to local hdd is fine!
Its put 3GB file to local hdd perfect!.

The problem appear only if I export to the network!

So if you export to the local hard drive, you get an OK file… what happens then when you copy this file to the network drive?

Perfect copy, its copy all of the 3GB (no chunking 🙂 )!
And even if I save as from QTPlayer PRO!

    Yeah, its workaround
    But very time consuming.
I plan to export every day around 10 hour of DV25 material.
The export time everyday 2-3 hour (approx 20-30 percent of source duration).
With workaround I get 2xtimes (once to local, once copy), sum: 4-6hour 🙁

Anyone can try to export to WinXP share over 2GB file?

I made some additional investigation next few days and post it…

If you have an IT person who can help? There’s probably some sort of limitation that “might” be changed on the network side? i.e, maybe there’s a limit on file size that could be lifted on the drive system you are saving to?

Even though the previous post is 2 years old, I am having the same 2gb file limitation problem. My workarounds are the same as the originator of this thread and I have also unchecked the file limitation option. Our network storage drive is shared my MACs and PCs. I am wondering if a solution ever came out of this? I am running MAC OSX 10.4.10 – FCP 6.0.1.

    Thanks!
    Scott

The 2 gig file limit is a problem with Windows… drives formated for PC’s cannot deal with file sizes larger than that. so my guess is that until this problem is addressed, you’ll not be able to save larger than 2 gig files.
