Nice read and great info. Can you post the details(or link) of what you had to do to get this working? And you mentioned there are problems with STP. What would these be exactly, I just loaded it yesterday and am getting started. I can’t believe Mackie would drop the ball on this one.
Thanks, Chris -

July 9, 2005 at 5:19 pmWell Chris, with regard to the Tascam, if you have one it’s best that you try to get it working first and then ask me specifically what to do if you encounter problems. Suffice it to say for now that you should make sure you have the latest software (1.5) AND FIRMWARE – both of which are downloadable from the Tascam site.
AS to STPro my main concern is that when you send a clip to STP for (say) cleaning up or getting rid of clicks etc., then when you try to send it back to FCP, it wont go back – probably because it has remedied the entire take, when all you wanted was the bit you used. In fact sometimes STP wont save the item you’ve cured, because it is too long. However, I’m sure you’ll find more specific problems on the STP Cow site.

July 9, 2005 at 6:18 pmAre you having good luck with the rest of FCP5? I am going back and forth over wanting to install it or not.

I got the Behringer surface and it works fine alongside my Mackie 1202. It’s not redundant at all. But the Tascam is a nice unit. Good info.

July 9, 2005 at 6:43 pmHi Chris,
Well y’see, you have two boxes on your desk. That’s precisely what I didn’t want and that’s why I like the Tascam. If you’re happy though that’s all I care about!

July 9, 2005 at 6:59 pmThis is only a problem for people that capture entire tape rolls. If you log and capture short and discrete clips AKA scene & take, then STP has no trouble.
The problem is that many people capture an entire tape, something I try not to do unless I have to. Even then, I will subclip and then media manage or batch export those subclips so that they are shorter and easier to work with, to sort and to manage.
I do understand that many people need to capture tape rolls, especially events producers. But for corporate and dramatic stuff, I highly recommend scene and take. The STP limitation is just another one of those reasons to do so. Granted, STP should be able to work with clips of all lengths.

July 9, 2005 at 7:47 pmKevin, in my heart I know you’re right but I’m dealing with material that was captured and cut by others, then handed to me for re-editing. “It’s not funny enough – make it funny” was the brief. So not a perfect world.
I do think / hope that those lovely people at Apple will be looking into the STP situation at the next revision.
The main point of my post was though that the Tascam is cool and it may provoke other editors to take the plunge through to the Control Surface.

July 9, 2005 at 8:00 pmHi Everyone
It was satisfing that I was able to get Godfrey up and running with his 1082.
I think it was smart of tascam to build a standard mixer with surface controls.
It can control 8 tracks at a time —-up to 32 total with its surface control.
I can’t see why every other company who designs and sell mixers would not have something like it in their portfolio. The CS tech person you want to speak with over at Tascam is David Hummel.
We worked together to find out that there is a bug with FCP 5 and the 1082. Once you get it up and running you must make sure you have the software mixer in FCP open. Then you can hide it if it takes up too much real estate on your monitors. So far I haven’t any trouble since keeping it open.
If you do not -the 1082 may lose its control over FCP 5.Sorry this is new gear so I haven’t really tested it yet with STP.
I was happy just to get it running inside FCP 5
If any one has used it with STP I’d like to hear their results.
I plan to create a document that will walk you through the process to get the FW-1082 to operate with FCP 5.
Tascam does not have a pdf outling how to get the 1082 up and running with FCP 5 -at least not the last time I checked which was yesterday with Godfrey
You can email me if you are having trouble with the fw-1082
For the price this mixer is a must if you do not own something similar.
Take Care
