    Hi All

Running the new FCPX 10.04 here…. Simple little 5 min edit…. Shot on JVCHM100 in MOV 720 XD cam codec… Edits fine… No problem…. Beautifull…. But just 5 layers of text onto of one another and the system goes ape…. It hangs…. Beach Ball …. Wont play back…. Wont export…. NADA !

Remove it and its happy…. The Text is simple text created using the Custom Text Generator…. No heave graphics nothing …. Just TEXT !!!!

    Im using an iMAC 27inch i5 – 16gigs ram – Thunderbolt Drive

This happened before… All ok just don’t add text !!

I really think if Apple wants us to support this product they need to get it right !

[Will Granzier] “All ok just don’t add text !!”

But it’s not “just text”. Each Title and Generator is a Motion project. Will it render? Is it OK with 4 and then the 5th causes problems? Have you tried other Title effects/templates? Maybe something wonky with that effect. Or make a copy, edit it Motion and see if the copy works OK.

I just did a quick test on my very underpowered MacBook Pro 2007 with just 4GB of RAM and I was able to play 5 stacked “basic title”. I tried “custom” and got some dropped frames but not beach ball.

Could be a corrupted font. Try switching fonts.

Also the “custom” text generator actually has a lot of animation properties built in, like Oliver said. If you don’t need that use the “Basic Text” instead and see if that helps.

I have a similar system to yours. I do a lot of local and regional commercials. Multiple layers of text clips always bog down my system. That being said, I am asking it to do a lot with as many as 15-20 video and text layers with effects, color correction, multiple formats on the time line. Once I looked at it from that perspective it didn’t look so bad. I render sections when I have to, keep “background” rendering set to 30 seconds so that if I’m away from the edit system rendering kicks in or I just find something else to do while the whole piece renders. I have submitted feedback requesting improved performance under these circumstances. I know they read feedback because I have gotten responses in the past.

I did composite heavy spot a month ago and I found that actually the .5 second background rendering worked really well. Rarely did I ever have to wait for a render, it was just done as I was tweaking.

If you have a bunch of layered text effects you might consider creating your own Motion template with perhaps many different text objects. That way FCP X is only rendering one motion project, rather than a stack of a whole bunch. The text generator “Feature” is an example of this.
