If you have FCP footage on a FW drive and plug it into a computer, spotlight immediately starts indexing the drive and slowing your computer down. So you open up system preferences and add the drive to privacy (sometimes though, it won’t show up in the privacy tab and you do it all again.) You then check your computer processes to make sure that it actually really has stopped indexing. You edit and come back the next day. If you have rebooted, you do the dance again (although some have found that it will remember the drive in the privacy tab even after a reboot, this has not been my experience.) Now if you want to find any information on that FW drive, say a motion project you worked on last month and need to update it and bring it into your FCP project, and do a commandF to find it, you can’t. Because it is in the the privacy tab it stops not only spotlight but the finder search feature too – the only way to get round it is to let SL index the drive and you don’t want to have to do that everytime you plug it in. Anyone else have a better work around?
